star this property answer text
The political and security situation in Honduras remains volatile. In April and May protests against proposed reforms to health and education funding in Tegucigalpa turned violent. The UK updated its travel advice accordingly. More widely, significant numbers of migrants continue to leave the country for the US via Mexico and high levels of intimidation and violence perpetrated against human rights defenders and journalists persist. We engage with the Honduran Government on these issues through its non-resident Embassy in Guatemala City and through its membership of the G16 group of donors, and work closely with civil society organisations in Tegucigalpa.
more like this

At the Human Rights Council in March 2019, the UK strongly supported the renewal of the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on the Situation of Human Rights in Iran and supports the UN Special Rapporteur's assessment that discrimination against the Baha'i community in Iran is legally sanctioned by a lack of constitutional recognition and the absence of other legal protections for adherents of this faith. We have called on Iran to allow him access to the country so that he can carry out his mandate, and we encourage Iran to use this opportunity to engage with the international community.
more like this

The centres are the responsibility of the Libyan authorities. No UK funding or European Union Emergency Trust Fund (EUTF) funding is allocated to the Libyan Department for Combatting Illegal Migration (DCIM), nor detention centres in Libya. The EUTF is working to improve conditions for migrants in DCIM-run centres on a humanitarian basis. Initiatives include providing safe spaces for the most vulnerable, installing air ventilation, water, sanitation and hygiene items, toilet facilities, and providing mobile medical assistance. In parallel, the EU is seeking sustainable and humane alternatives for those in these centres, including by supporting voluntary returns or resettlement in safe third countries.
more like this

It was out of concern about the situation in Libya, including flows of arms, that the UK supported UN Security Council Resolution 1970 in 2011, which imposed an arms embargo. We have supported subsequent UN Security Council Resolutions authorising UN Member States to inspect vessels off the coast of Libya where there are reasonable grounds to suspect they are violating the embargo. We continue to work with our partners in the UN to support the implementation of the embargo, and to address reports of violations.
more like this

Projects related to migration, dating back to 2015, are listed below.

As part of the Department for International Development's £75 million programme supporting interventions in origin, transit and destination countries across the sub-Saharan and north African migration routes, up to £5 million will be allocated to humanitarian assistance and protection for migrants and refugees in Libya.
