star this property answer text <p>As stated in the Working Draft Environmental Statement (p.136), the approximate total of steel required for the HS2 project is 1.94 million metric tonnes.</p><p> </p><p>The procurements for contracts that will involve the purchase of steel have not yet concluded so no contract awards have been made. However, HS2 Ltd has already engaged with thousands of British businesses, to aid them in winning work on HS2. So far 98% of contracts for HS2, awarded directly and through the supply chain, have been won by British companies, with many more opportunities to come in the future. HS2 Ltd has let around £10bn worth of contracts and by the end of next year that will be around £20bn.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>A vessel being brought into service as a passenger ship would be subject to different requirements depending on their area of operation, the construction material and whether it has previously held a UK passenger vessel certificate. For the majority of such vessels, the standards applied are not those which are under review. A limited number of vessels could be brought into service under these older Regulations.</p><p> </p><p>Any vessels subject to the standards that will be modified by the review will have a two-year phase in period for compliance from the in-force date of the new legislation. star this property answer text <p>The Department for Transport supports the development of routes where there is high propensity for increasing functional cycling and walking journeys in a cost-effective way in line with the Government’s Cycling and Walking Strategy, and we are working with 46 local authorities to develop Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plans.</p><p> </p><p>In doing this, the department needs to take account of additional liabilities resulting from any granting of public access to, or transfer of, parts of the Historical Rail Estate that could create short or long-term improvement or maintenance costs to Highways England. The department believes that in such circumstances a transfer of the assets to the relevant local authority is the appropriate way forward so that the local authority can ensure that the relevant property conforms to local policies and that safety, security and long-term maintenance issues are addressed.</p><p> </p><p>Departmental officials are willing to support discussions relating to any such transfers.</p><p> </p>

The department recently produced guides, aimed specifically at commercial drivers, to help reduce the severity and impact of a diesel spill. Highways England is also looking at ways to improve how our own staff and service providers respond and deal with spillages. In April 2019, the department commenced a research project to understand the causes of fire in commercial vehicles.</p><p> </p><p>The department does not have evidence of what role litter plays in these incidents. As set out in the Litter Strategy for England (2017), the Government is committed to reducing the amount of litter on our network.</p>

The exercise sought to gauge market appetite for the taking of risk in relation to the design, construction, financing and funding of a new southern rail scheme to Heathrow Airport. The briefing document published as part of the market sounding did make clear that for schemes to be considered true market led proposals, full risk would have to be borne by the private sector.
