Between 1990 and 2017, the UK reduced its emissions by 42% while growing the economy by 73% – the best performance in the G7 on a per person basis.</p><p>The UK over-achieved against the first (2008-12) and second (2013-17) carbon budgets. We exceeded the required emissions reduction in the first carbon budget by 1.2%, and the second carbon budget by nearly 14%.</p><p>Since setting the 2050 net zero target, we have invested £2bn and will continue to build on the strong frameworks we have in place for driving decarbonisation across the UK economy.</p><p>2020 will be a vital year for climate action, and we will set out our ambitious plans in the run up to COP26 through a number of sectoral strategies, including the Transport Decarbonisation Plan, Energy White Paper and a policy roadmap for heat.</p> answering member printed Lord Duncan of Springbank question first answered 04/02/2020 15:27:23 answering member 4686 label Biography information for Lord Duncan of Springbank

The legislation that Parliament passed to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions in the UK by 2050 is aligned with advice from our independent Committee on Climate Change, and is based on evidence regarding global emissions provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s Special Report on the impact of 1.5°C global warming.</p><p> </p><p>The evidence shows that in order to limit global warming to 1.5°C, global emissions of carbon dioxide must roughly halve by 2030 and reach net zero by around 2050. The UK’s net zero target is for all greenhouse gases which goes beyond this global pathway to 1.5°C. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/06/2019 answer text <p>Research into Solar Radiation Management (SRM) technologies was commissioned by the Department of Energy and Climate Change and published in peer-reviewed scientific journals; references are given in our published position statement, attached.</p><p> </p><p>We did not commission further research because the next logical step was to do similar studies with different climate models run by institutions in other countries. This has been taken forward by the World Climate Research Programme’s Geoengineering Model Intercomparison Project (GeoMIP), which has served to coordinate SRM simulations across international modelling groups. Results from this project indicate that there are still large uncertainties in the effectiveness of SRM and its potential wider impacts on the environment.
