star this property answer text <p>​As I said in the House of Commons on 3 September, we are gravely concerned by the heavy-handed response by police to protests in Harare on 16 August and the recent arrests and abductions of opposition figures. Our Ambassador raised our concerns with the Foreign Minister on 22 August and the Defence Minister on 29 August. President Mnangagwa must hold those responsible for human rights violations to account. Zimbabwe remains one of the UK’s 30 Human Rights Priority Countries globally.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Due to a combination of drought, economic challenges and the impact of Cyclone Idai, Zimbabwe is facing a humanitarian crisis. Without support, more than 5.5 million people will not have access to the food they need by March 2020. In response, on 9 August 2019, the Secretary of State for International Development announced a new £49million Humanitarian and Resilience Programme that will build on current DFID interventions in livelihoods, food security, resilience, and rural water supply by helping communities and institutions cope with climate change, the macroeconomic context, and other shocks and stresses</p><p> </p><p>This programme is in line with the Global Goals of reducing poverty, achieving food security, ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all and tackling climate change and its impacts.</p><p> </p><p>No UK aid is given directly to the Government of Zimbabwe; all support is channelled through trusted aid partners.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The British Government is engaging actively with the Government of Zambia on the drought affecting large parts of Zambia to ensure assistance is provided to the many Zambians facing food insecurity.</p><p>On 29<sup>th</sup> August, the Department for International Development’s (DFID) visiting Director for West and Southern Africa met with the Zambian Minister of Finance and raised the allocation of resources for the drought response. The Head of Office for DFID Zambia and the British High Commissioner also met with the Vice President last month and encouraged Zambia to request international emergency assistance to scale up the response. DFID is in close contact with Zambia’s Disaster Management Response Unit, the United Nations, and international Non-Governmental Organisations on the ground. The UK is planning to provide support to respond through Emergency Cash Transfers and treatment of acute malnutrition in the worst affected areas.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Three new youth voice projects were announced in February to encourage young people to participate in making national policy:</p><p> </p><p>- Youth Steering Group</p><p>- Young Inspectors Group</p><p>- Digital Youth engagement research</p><p> </p><p>The Youth Steering Group has already been involved in discussing the Government’s future offer for young people and the review of the guidance which sets out the statutory duty placed on local authorities to provide appropriate local youth services. The Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs and the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy invited the Youth Steering Group to conduct a review of environment and climate policy. Young people are also contributing to policy development on serious violence through the Government’s Youth Advisory Forum on Serious Violence .</p><p> </p><p>The Young Inspectors Group are participating in the monitoring and evaluation of national programmes affecting young people.</p><p> </p><p>The Digital Youth Engagement research explored how new digital solutions can enable large numbers of young people to play a role in consultations and policy design across government.</p><p> </p><p>We will make further announcements on these pioneering Youth Voice projects in due course</p>
