star this property answer text
The Armed Forces only visit schools and colleges when they have been invited to support activities. No visits to schools by the Armed Forces are directly linked to recruitment, other than specific careers/jobs fairs which generally involve a range of employers. While presentations may be given highlighting the careers available in the Armed Forces, no pupil is able to make a commitment to become a recruit in the Armed Forces during the course of a visit. The visits cover a range of activities such as career events, citizenship talks, science and maths challenges and other indoor or outdoor exercises. The purpose of the visit is always agreed in advance.

In the academic year 2017-18, centrally held records indicate that the Navy conducted an estimated 3,240 school visits and the Army carried out 4,710 visits. Records held by the Royal Air Force (RAF) indicate that in the period 1 April 2017 to 31 March 2018 the RAF visited 2,310 schools.

It will take time to collate the information for 2018-19 and to establish whether the figures can be broken down by country. I will write to the hon. Member when these enquiries are complete.

Many of these are covered by existing risk assessment and control measures, but the employing branch will identify any additional control measures/changes required in accordance with the normal risk assessment process.

All Armed Forces personnel are trained for a wide range of operational tasks and environments, including combat. Our policies on under 18s in Service are robust and comply with national and international law.

Commanding Officers take their responsibilities towards their personnel extremely seriously. Commanding Officers pay close attention to the needs of under 18s as they pass from recruitment through Phase 1 and Phase 2 training, to operational units.

These include the new Your Army marketing campaign, measures to reduce the time between applicants applying and starting training, greater access to military role models for applicants during the process and a new IT system which is providing enhanced management data.

Regular soldier applications are at a five-year high, and while it is premature to assess the success of the current 'Your Army' campaign, early indications are of a strong start in attracting candidates to join the Army, with over 10,000 applicants to join the Regular Army in January. It will take longer to see increases in trained strength due to the length of the recruitment and training pipelines.

more like this
