star this property answer text <p>We are living in a period where the UK and our international partners face sustained hostile activity from certain states, and the Government takes this threat to the country very seriously.</p><p><br>The Home Office has taken a number of steps to counter hostile state activity. For example, the Counter-Terrorism and Border Security Act, which gained Royal Assent on 12 February 2019, provides a new power to stop, question, search and detain an individual at a port or border area to determine whether they are, or have been, involved in hostile state activity.</p><p><br>In addition, the Home Office is currently leading a review of existing Coun-ter-Hostile State Activity legislation in the UK, to establish whether further legislation is required to strengthen our response to all forms of hostile state activity.</p> more like this

We have to ensure that we have the necessary powers to meet current and evolving threats to the UK, both domestically and overseas.</p><p>The Home Office is continuing to review the legislation relating to hostile state activity to assess whether additional powers are required to clamp down on the activities of hostile states which threaten the UK.</p><p>As part of this, we are considering like-minded international partners’ legislation to see whether the UK would benefit from adopting a form of foreign agent registration.</p><p>This work remains ongoing and has not reached conclusions yet.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As announced in the Queen’s Speech of May 2021, the Home Office will be introducing new legislation to provide the security services and law enforcement agencies with the tools they need to tackle the evolving threat of hostile activity by foreign states.</p><p>This legislation will modernise existing offences, to deal more effectively with the espionage threat, and create new offences, to criminalise other harmful activity conducted by, and on behalf of states.</p><p>A bill will be introduced as soon as parliamentary time allows.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As the Government set out in the Integrated Review, it will be essential to take a whole-of-society approach to resilience across the United Kingdom.</p><p>The taskforce announced by the Minister for Security earlier this week will drive forward work to defend the democratic integrity of our country. It will work with Parliament, political parties, government departments, the security and intelligence agencies, the devolved Administrations and private sector to better protect our freedoms and institutions from a range of threats.</p><p>I am not able to comment on the exact parameters or scope of the taskforce at this point, but I can assure Lord Rennard that work is taking place within Departments at pace to define exactly these points.</p><p>In addition, national security is a priority for this Government, and there are already numerous workstreams underway to add resilience and robustness to our democracy, including the Defending Democracy programme established in 2019 and the National Security Bill.</p>
