The BIOT Marine Protected Area (MPA) is highly valued by scientists from many countries who consider it a global reference site for marine conservation in an ocean which is heavily overfished. Ministers are committed to further consultation with Mauritius about the establishment of the MPA in order to have due regard to its rights and interests, as directed by the Arbitral Tribunal of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. This would include the Acquisition of Land for Public Purposes Ordinance 1983, which confirms and declares that all land in the Territory is Crown Land. Before any disposition of land could lawfully be made, this Ordinance would require amendment or repeal.
