star this property answer text <p>Zero hours contracts were considered as part of the Review of Modern Working Practices and we agree with the review in concluding that banning zero hours contracts altogether “would negatively impact more people than it would help”.</p><p> </p><p>The review, and Government, recognises that zero hours contracts have an important part to play in a modern, flexible labour market and benefit those who cannot or do not want to work in a regular contract.</p><p> </p><p>We have published our response to the review which commits to firm action and future legislation where appropriate. This includes a commitment to provide a right to request a more predictable contract for all workers, including those on zero hours contracts. We have also agreed to ask the Low Pay Commission to consider higher minimum wage rates for workers on zero hours contracts for non-guaranteed hours.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The law is clear that interns must be paid at least minimum wage rates if they are doing the job of a worker.</p><p> </p><p>HMRC will make unpaid interns a priority for their targeted, intelligence led enforcement of the National Minimum Wage. This will build upon the work conducted to target sectors and employers advertising unpaid internships online. Since November HMRC investigators have issued more than 550 warning letters to employers advertising for unpaid interns through job websites.</p><p> </p><p>Additionally, the Government will publish further guidance for employers to make it absolutely clear when they must pay minimum wage rates to interns.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Order requires all employers to provide details in payslips on the total number of hours paid for. This is to allow workers to identify any under recording of hours worked, and to encourage them to either raise this with their employer or make a free, confidential complaint to Acas. During a Government consultation we gathered evidence on the benefits and drawbacks of introducing further provisions requiring employers to disaggregate hours worked on payslips, and decided against making this a statutory requirement. star this property answer text <p>When fully staffed the Office for Product Safety and Standards will employ around 290 people. This includes approximately 180 existing staff covering pre-existing functions and up to 110 new posts specifically for product safety. The new posts will enable the Office to significantly increase national capacity in scientific, technical, enforcement and other product safety functions. Recruitment to those posts has already begun and positions are being filled by a mix of internal and external recruitment to ensure the Office has the specialist expertise it needs.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>New funding for the Office for Product Safety and Standards has been allocated from within existing Departmental budgets to increase spending on product safety. When the Office is fully operational its budget will include an additional £12m per year for new product safety activities, as announced in the Government’s response to the Working Group on Product Recalls and Safety. The budget for the Office for its first full year of operation in 2018/19 is expected to be around £25m in total which includes around £9m additional funding for product safety.</p> more like this
