star this property answer text In June 2016 the Human Rights Council published a report detailing the horrific extent of trafficking of Yezidi women within Iraq and Syria. We do not have any evidence to suggest that Yezidi women are being trafficked outside of Iraq and Syria. We continue to work closely with our Global Coalition partners to defeat Daesh, including those in the region. more like this

We are seeking their views on how best to use the 2019 international meeting to maintain the momentum established at the 2014 Global Summit, assess progress achieved since then, and agree areas for further action. We see the event as a platform to allow the voice of the survivors of sexual violence, their families and communities to be heard and for their needs to be at the centre of any international response. We want to ensure that commitments are delivered, including through using UK-funded tools such as the Principles for Global Action and the International Protocol on the documentation and investigation of sexual violence in conflict, through new research, and through a more collaborative approach by the international community.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK is deeply concerned by the serious deterioration of the humanitarian situation in Yemen. Even before the Saudi-led Coalition recently announced the temporary closure of all sea, land and air routes into Yemen, the country was the world’s largest humanitarian crisis with 21 million people in need of humanitarian assistance. The Coalition has since announced the reopening of ports and airports in areas controlled by the Government of Yemen, but these remain closed in areas not under government control - where 71% of Yemenis in severe humanitarian need live.

While the UK remains committed to supporting Saudi Arabia to address its legitimate security needs, it is absolutely vital that Yemen is kept open to humanitarian access and commercial supplies and personnel, upon which the Yemeni population depend. We are raising the importance of these points at the highest levels.

The UK continues to play a leading role in lobbying all sides to find a peaceful solution. As the pen-holder on Yemen at the UN Security Council the UK proposed and coordinated a UN Security Council Presidential Statement in June calling for an end to the conflict and the resumption of peace talks. The UK has since been pushing for a revived political process.

star this property answer text
The UK is a leading international advocate for safe, rapid and unhindered humanitarian access into Yemen. In June we used our role as penholder at the UN Security Council to sponsor and coordinate a Presidential Statement, agreed on 15 June, which called for an end to the fighting, a return to UN-led peace talks, and the recognition of the importance of unhindered humanitarian access. Our position has not changed. The 4 November attempted missile attack on Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, was a heinous act which deliberately targeted a civilian area and was intercepted over an international airport. We have condemned it in the strongest terms and recognise Saudi Arabia's legitimate need to protect its national security. At the same time, as our statement of 15 November made clear, it is vital that Yemen remains open to humanitarian and commercial access. The Saudi-led Coalition has stated that it will take into account the provision of humanitarian supplies as it reviews procedures designed to implement provisions on weapon flows in UNSCR 2216. This is welcome, as are reports that ports are functioning in areas controlled by the Government of Yemen. Clearly there is further to go however to ensure humanitarian and commercial access throughout Yemen. We have engaged with the Saudi Arabian Government at the highest levels on these issues since the 4 November incident and will continue to do so. We are also closely engaged with the UAE and other regional and international partners.
