star this property answer text
As set out in the UN’s Global Goals, urgent action is needed to mobilise, redirect and unlock the transformative power of trillions of dollars of private resources to deliver on sustainable development objectives. Long-term investments, including foreign direct investment, are needed in critical sectors, especially in developing countries. CDC’s work is focused on mobilising capital for specific sustainable development priorities such as health, education and infrastructure, helping to fill the annual financing gap of $2.5 trillion needed every year and deliver against the Goals by 2030.
more like this

Given the lifesaving work UK aid does across the globe, driving value for money also means that fewer lives are wasted to the scourge of poverty and disease. Driving the very best results for our money is therefore as much about helping the poorest as it is for justifying spending to those paying for it.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK stands as one of the world’s largest funders of essential health commodities for developing countries, largely due to our investment in multilateral organisations such as the Global Fund and Gavi, the Vaccines Alliance.

We work hard to ensure that our bilateral and multilateral partners secure maximum value for money in their purchasing of health commodities through best commercial practice, including international competitive tendering, and partnerships with the private sector. DFID’s work in this area has unlocked huge value gains across a number of key health commodity markets. For example, the cost of a year’s supply of antiretrovirals for HIV/AIDS has fallen by 50% since 2010. By the end of 2015, 17 million patients across the globe were on antiretroviral treatment, compared with 0.7 million in 2000.
more like this

star this property answer text
A focus on improving access to school and learning outcomes drives DFID’s approach to investment in education in priority countries.

DFID has pledged to support 11 million children with an education between 2015 and 2020. Not just to get children into school, but to ensure they are learning. All of DFID’s education programmes prioritise learning and we are seeing results; for example the Girls Education Challenge has increased the learning outcomes in literacy and mathematics for 700,000 girls across 18 countries. Motivated, trained, effective teachers are essential for children to learn. In Tanzania we are rolling out in-service teacher training with a focus on literacy, numeracy and better pedagogy for over 45,000 teachers in 7 disadvantaged regions.

In Bangladesh, DFID support the ‘English in Action’ programme in which school teachers receive specially designed training modules and lesson plans directly to their low cost mobile phones. It has been shown to improve their teaching and is being modified for use in Nigeria. DFID is also working internationally to embed a global focus on the quality of education.

DFID championed the inclusion of learning indicators in the Sustainable Development Goals and increased support for international monitoring to track progress. We have commissioned rigorous impact evaluations to understand what works to improve learning and ensure good value for money is achieved.

The UK has acted quickly, responding with a commitment of £35 million, a significant proportion of which is aimed at the food and nutrition response. This includes logistics support through the World Food Programme to enable the delivery of food to 4.75 million people, and cash transfers through an International Non-Governmental Organisations consortium to enable over 250,000 of the most vulnerable to purchase food. The UK has provided emergency nutrition support, including screening for over 1 million children, and treatment of 100,000 emergency cases. As well as this immediate support the UK is working closely with other key actors to identify and progress ways to break the cycle of food insecurity in Malawi.

more like this
