It is important that all sides conduct thorough and conclusive investigations into incidents where it is alleged that IHL has been breached. The Saudi Arabian Government has their own internal procedures for investigations. At a press conference on 31 January they announced more detail of how they investigate such incidents. The Saudi led Coalition Joint Investigations Assessment Team announced the outcome of 8 investigations on 4 August.
more like this

All export licence applications are assessed on a case-by-case basis against the Consolidated EU and National Arms Export Licensing Criteria, taking account of all relevant factors at the time of the application. The key test for our continued arms exports to Saudi Arabia in relation to International Humanitarian Law (IHL) is whether there is a clear risk that those items might be used in a serious violation of IHL. The situation is kept under careful and continual review.
more like this

It was extremely encouraging to see the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union and the UN Security Council join together to put regional and international pressure on Jammeh to leave peacefully. ECOWAS efforts to mediate and to find a peaceful solution were critical. The UK has a long and historic relationship with The Gambia and I look forward to working closely with President Barrow's Government to further develop our already strong bilateral and economic links.
more like this

Friend the Member for Uxbridge and South Ruislip (Mr Johnson) received regular updates on the political situation in The Gambia as it developed, from our Ambassador in Banjul. He also received regular reporting on the UN response to the situation from the UK Mission in New York, led by Matthew Rycroft. The UK Mission played an active role in New York in ensuring the Security Council reacted appropriately and in a timely manner. The UN was an important part of international efforts, alongside regional efforts, to put pressure on former President Jammeh to step down and respect the will of the Gambian people. The UN Security Council adopted a resolution on 20 January to this effect
more like this

As the Minister responsible for Africa, I spoke directly to the President-elect, Mr Adama Barrow, last week, to congratulate him on his victory and to offer the UK's support. But we are deeply concerned by President Jammeh's recent rejection of the elections' clear and legitimate result and strongly condemn any attempt to disrupt the peaceful, constitutional transfer of power. We welcome the clear, unified statement of the UN Security Council on 10 December calling for the results to be respected, as well as the efforts of the Economic Community Of West African States to impress on President Jammeh the need to respect the will of the people and ensure a peaceful handover of power to President-elect Barrow.
more like this
