star this property answer text
Since the UN High Commissioner of Human Rights' statement on 11 September, our Ambassador has raised the situation in Rakhine with Burmese Ministers and has set out our concerns about the violence, the large scale displacement of civilians, and the need for improved humanitarian access. The Foreign Secretary had earlier spoken to State Counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi on 7 September in similar terms and to underline the need for any allegations of human rights abuses to be investigated. Subsequently, at his press conference on 14 September, the Foreign Secretary described the situation in Rakhine as an “abomination”, and urged the displaced Rohingya to be allowed back and for the abuse of their human rights and killings to stop.
more like this

Safe zones in Syria would be a difficult and complex option, that would require significant military resource, and for which there is currently no Parliamentary support in the UK. At the international level, Security Council members continue to discuss a range of humanitarian responses to the conflict in Syria, but there is no agreement so far. There is currently no prospect of passing a credible resolution in the Security Council as Russia has indicated that it would veto any resolution that did not have the support of the Syrian regime.

more like this

star this property answer text
The UK regularly discusses the threat of ISIL both within the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) and at the UN more widely, most recently at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) at the end of September. The UK has supported UNSC Resolutions 2170 and 2199, which condemn ISIL and restrict its financial, trade and recruitment networks, as well as UNGA Resolution A/RES/69/281. However, we currently judge that there is no prospect of a resolution authorising the use of force against ISIL in Syria that wouldn’t be vetoed by Russia.
more like this

star this property answer text The Coalition has carried out more than 8,000 airstrikes in Iraq and Syria. Coupled with Iraqi ground troops’ operations, these have meant ISIL’s advances have been halted and 30% of the territory ISIL held in Iraq after its advance last summer has been regained. In Syria, Coalition airpower helped Kurdish forces retake Kobane and push ISIL back towards Raqqa. US Central Command, which coordinates Coalition airstrikes against ISIL, assesses that as of 8 Oct 2015, Coalition military action had destroyed or damaged over 13,500 ISIL targets in Iraq and Syria, including nearly 4,000 fighting positions. These are significant blows for an organisation whose strength prior to the launch of Coalition action emanated from its continued expansion and a false aura of invincibility. more like this
