star this property answer text <p>The Department’s National Institute for Health Research is funding the Health Protection Research Unit in Health Impacts of Environmental Hazards, whose remit includes air pollution research. This unit is a partnership between King’s College London and Public Health England in collaboration with Imperial College London.</p><p> </p><p>The Research Councils, funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, invest in a range of research into the health impacts of air pollution exposure in the United Kingdom and internationally. They also support research into the sources and processes controlling air pollution and how it can be better monitored and mitigated to inform integrated policies across health, the natural and built environments, transport and energy.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Committee on the Medical Effects of Air Pollutants (COMEAP) discussed the indoor air pollution content of its work programme and acknowledged that COMEAP’s work has been out of necessity, dominated by ambient air pollutants to support and inform the national air quality plans. This work has taken priority, even though COMEAP’s remit includes both ambient and indoor air pollution.</p><p> </p><p>Given the current work priorities for COMEAP, it is unlikely that it will be engaging in work on indoor air pollutants over the coming year.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has asked the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to develop guidance on indoor air pollution. NICE is currently working with Public Health England to develop the scope for this guidance.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>There was an estimate of 600 deaths across the United Kingdom over the 10 days of High and Very High air pollution compared to around 300 associated with typical particulate (PM<sub>2.5</sub>) air pollution levels.</p><p> </p><p>The mortality estimates are calculated based on published epidemiological exposure response coefficients. It is not possible to determine which individuals were impacted by this episode specifically, nor the length of time that deaths were brought forward by.</p> more like this

Public Health England (PHE) has commissioned a consortium led by the UK Health Forum to carry out a project on the estimation of costs to the NHS and social care due to the health impacts of air pollution as part of PHE’s Health Economics Commissioning Framework. The aim is to enable air pollution to be assessed against other public health threats and to support the strategic priority setting process.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Exposure to short-lived air pollution episodes (over a few days or weeks) has been associated with increases in respiratory and cardiovascular disease events, potentially leading to increased risk of mortality and hospitalisation, and exacerbation of conditions, such as asthma.</p><p> </p><p>Public Health England looked at the impact of two air pollution episodes (related to particulate matter, PM2.5) over a 10-day period in March and April 2014 (Macintyre et al., 2016). It was found that the total burden of emergency hospital admissions for respiratory and cardiovascular causes associated with short-term exposure to PM2.5 was estimated to be around 1,500 across the United Kingdom (around 3.5% of total emergency respiratory and cardiovascular hospital admissions). Around 785 of these would be expected from more typical pollution levels at this time of year.</p> more like this
