star this property answer text <p>Defra uses both monitoring and modelling to assess air quality in the UK. Measurement data is updated hourly on our website at:</p><p><a href="http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk" target="_blank">http://uk-air.defra.gov.uk</a> for the 142 automatic monitoring sites across the UK.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>While Defra does not monitor air pollution in central and eastern Europe, the UK air quality forecast provided by the Met Office takes account of European emissions and forecast weather conditions.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>Defra also operates a network that measures particle numbers, size and composition, providing additional information about sources of particulate pollution. We have already committed over £2 billion since 2011 in transport measures to improve air quality and will be publishing revised air quality plans for nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>) by the end of this year. The plans will set out actions at all levels, including national and local, to achieve compliance with legal limits for NO<sub>2</sub> in the shortest possible time.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>38 UK zones are exceeding EU air pollution limit values. An entire zone is considered to be in exceedance if any point within the zone boundary is in exceedance. While only 17.6% of total modelled road length exceeds EU limit values, the total land area covered by the 38 zones is equivalent to 72.6% of the total UK land area, but the points within the zones which are in exceedance cover a much smaller land area.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this
