	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/12/2022 answer text <p>The Home Office has a legal obligation to provide support to asylum-seekers who would otherwise be destitute.</p><p>Those wishing to claim asylum are expected to do so on arrival at the port of entry or, if already in the UK, and their circumstances change, as soon as possible at the Asylum Intake Unit (AIU) in Croydon. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/01/2023 answer text <p>For several years, record numbers of people cross the Channel in small boats, and this surge has placed the Home Office’s asylum support infrastructure and accommodation services under immense pressure. <ins class="ministerial">In order to meet our statutory obligations to accommodate asylum seekers who would otherwise be destitute, we have been forced to temporarily house asylum seekers in hotels.</ins> The use of hotels is a short term solution and we are working hard with Local Authorities and our accommodation providers to find more appropriate accommodation.</p><p>We continue to work collaboratively with Local Authorities through the establishment of multi-agency forums to understand and address operational impacts on local areas. We will keep the Home Affairs Select Committee updated on the progress of all the Wendy Williams recommendations.</del></p><p><strong></strong></p><p><ins class="ministerial">We understand the importance and value of engaging with communities impacted by the Windrush scandal through face-to-face engagement. The Home Office has held over 200 public engagement and outreach events across the country to raise awareness of the Windrush Schemes, including 120 one-to-one surgeries attended by Windrush Help teams to support people applying for documentation.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">We continue to work collaboratively with communities through the Windrush Community Fund launched in 2020 and have supported 27 community and grassroot organisations to provide promotional and outreach activity on the Windrush Schemes. The wellbeing of children is our number one priority and our accommodation providers are required to ensure accommodation is safe and in line with contractual requirements.</del></p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">It is also not true to say that unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are being kidnapped from Home Office hotels. Unaccompanied asylum-seeking children are not detained and are free to leave the accommodation. They may choose to leave for a number of reasons, such as visiting family.</del></p><p> </p><p><del class="ministerial">Local authorities have a statutory duty to protect all children, regardless of where they go missing from.
