star this property answer text <p>In 2016, 14% of English rivers assessed under the European Water Framework Directive were in good ecological status. However, all individual indicators tested must be met to achieve this, which masks the actual state of the environment as 76% of the individual indicators tested are at good or better status.</p><p>Since 2015, over 3,100 miles of surface water have been enhanced to achieve good status and the Environment Agency (EA) has set a target in the Government’s River Basin Management Plans to enhance 5,000 miles by 2021. The 2015 River Basin Management Plans confirmed £3billion worth of investment over six years</p><p><br> The latest assessments of rivers will be produced in 2020 and will be used to update the River Basin Management Plans. These updated plans are due to be published at the end of 2021 when it will be possible to forecast progress for 2027.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Natural England, like all other Defra sponsored bodies, receives a budget to carry out its duties and responsibilities in line with what is affordable and the Government’s priorities for the natural environment. Natural England has responded to the need to balance public spending and to deploy resources to best effect.</p><p> </p><p>Defra’s recent one-year Spending Round settlement for the financial year 2020/21 saw an additional £30 million for terrestrial and marine biodiversity measures, to support the maintenance and restoration of vital habitats for wildlife, progress nature-based solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, and deliver the 25 Year Environment Plan. Government departments will shortly begin planning for a full Spending Review in 2020. Defra will work with Natural England to determine future funding necessary from 2020 to deliver Natural England’s contribution to Government’s ambitions for the environment.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>There is currently only one operational shale gas exploration site in the UK. The Environment Agency (EA) has set legally binding conditions to require monitoring and control of methane emissions at the hydraulic fracturing site in Lancashire. Cuadrilla are required to carry out regular emissions monitoring, including continuous monitoring of methane to air before and during shale gas operations. The results are submitted regularly to the EA. The levels of methane in the ambient air are also monitored independently off site by the EA and the British Geological Survey.</p> more like this

This has resulted in the suspension of action by one of the trade unions.</p><p> </p><p>The EA has a portfolio of transformational projects which will better support the development of any future pay reform, and on which the EA is working collaboratively with its trade unions.</p><p> </p><p>In the meantime, the EA will move forward with a pay deal for 2019 which will be in line with the Government’s Civil Service pay remit guidance for 2019 to 2020.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The delivery of the animals in science regulatory framework provides oversight, rigour and scrutiny. The HO publishes guidance and a code of practice on the housing and care that explain how the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 (ASPA) is administered and enforced.</p><p>Animals in Science Regulation Unit (ASRU) inspection programme is a cornerstone for the protection of animals used for experimental or other scientific procedures. Home Office Inspectors undertake visits, within a risk-based framework, to all establishments licensed to breed or supply animals, or to carry out regulated procedures on animals under the ASPA in Great Britain, to inspect the welfare, health and environment of the animals at the facility. All inspectors are veterinary or medical professionals.</p><p>The Home Office does not sponsor research relating to animals used in science.</p><p>The Home Office does not hold information requested with regards to exported animals.</p> more like this
