	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/05/2022 answer text <p>Ebola virus disease is endemic to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and naturally present in some animal species. The outbreak identified in Mbandaka is DRC's 14th outbreak on record and the fifth in the past 4 years. Since the current outbreak was declared on 23 April there have been 3 confirmed cases, all sadly deceased. The World Health Organisation (WHO) assess the risk of the outbreak as moderate at the regional level and low at the global level. DRC's growing expertise in responding to outbreaks, the development of effective vaccines, and the greater inclusion of communities in response efforts, has led to significant progress in the management of Ebola outbreaks.</p><p>The DRC Government initiated a rapid response to the current outbreak with key activities, including vaccination, beginning within days of the outbreak being declared. UK supported response mechanisms, such as the UN's Central Emergency Response Fund which has allocated $2 million, have enabled the response to address key risks and meet immediate needs. No new cases have been confirmed since 4 May. We continue to work with the DRC Government and partners to track the outbreak and response. The response has been hampered by numerous attacks against health workers and health facilities. The UK strongly condemns such attacks, while commending the bravery of all the health workers working tirelessly to end the outbreak. Goma’s position on the border increases the chance of Ebola spreading to Rwanda.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is a leading donor to the Ebola response in DRC and has played a pivotal role in helping neighbouring countries like Rwanda prepare. On 15 July, DFID announced that the UK would provide up to a further £50 million to the response to December 2019. The UK has been a major supporter of the response since the start, providing funding, technical expertise, and political support.</p><p> </p><p>The response has been hampered by repeated attacks against health workers and health facilities. Improving community trust and ownership are essential to getting the outbreak under control. UK funding supports community engagement and working with local leaders and religious groups to foster trust and ownership. It supports efforts to understand community concerns better and feed this understanding back into the response. This has included providing significant funding and technical expertise.
