star this property answer text <p>We used our Presidency of the G7 in May to agree a leader-level Girls' Education Declaration prioritising girls' education in the recovery from the pandemic. The Girls' Education Declaration commits the G7 to work with developing country partners, multilateral institutions, civil society, girl-led groups and youth leaders, to remove the obstacles to education that stand in girls' way and empower girls to lead change, including in peacebuilding and efforts to tackle the climate crisis. The Prime Minister also launched the Girls' Education Action Plan in May which commits the UK, through our Special Envoy, to engaging with youth activists and encouraging their leadership as a powerful catalyst for change.</p><p>Our flagship 'Girls' Education Challenge' supports girls to gain the critical skills needed to make the most of their potential. For example, in Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe we are working with CAMFED to support over 269,000 girls to get a high quality education and thousands of learner guides, graduates from the programme, to lead initiatives to support girls' education within their communities and join forces with district and national authorities to drive change at a wider scale, ultimately re-setting the context for future generations of girls.</p>

These reports resonate well with DFID’s Education Policy: <em>Get Children Learning.</em> The UK will continue to support 12 years of quality education for girls and boys, starting with the basics of literacy and numeracy.</p><p> </p><p>To achieve this, we:</p><p>a) Drive improvements in teaching which benefit all children in the classroom;</p><p>b) Support ambitious system reform which helps teachers succeed and keeps children safe; and</p><p>c) Provide targeted support to disadvantaged girls, children with disabilities and those affected by conflict and crisis.</p><p> </p><p>We use our leadership on the world stage to shine a spotlight on the needs of the most marginalised and strengthen the multilateral system of support for education.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Supporting delivery of Sustainable Development Goal 4 by promoting 12 years of quality education for all children, especially girls, by 2030 is a top priority for the Prime Minister, and was a commitment in the Conservative Manifesto.</p><p>Girls’ education is central to the UK’s drive to tackle poverty, boost economic growth, improve stability, reduce conflict and to address climate change.</p><p>The UK is a leading donor and between 2015 and 2019 UK Aid supported 14.3 million children to gain a decent education.</p><p>DFID’s 2018 education policy sets UK priorities for global education to:</p><p>- Improve teaching: develop teacher’s skills and knowledge, boost motivation, retain and monitor performance,</p><p>- Back education reforms which deliver results in the classroom, to make systems more accountable, inclusive and effective,</p><p>- Step up targeted support for the most marginalised children (focusing on hard to reach girls, children affected by crises, children with disabilities).</p><p>We are delivering this by providing focused support in 20 countries and supporting education in a further 50 through global programmes such as the Girls’ Education Challenge and support to the Global Partnership for Education.</p>

star this property answer text <p>We have committed to publish an annual report tracking progress against the two new global objectives, in collaboration with UNESCO and the UN Girls' Education Initiative. The report is due to be published in the summer of 2022 and annually will highlight the progress that low- and lower-middle-income countries have made in getting 40 million more girls into school and 20 million more girls reading by the age of 10, as well as demonstrating the obstacles that are still to be overcome.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We have built on the momentum of the G7 and UK-hosted Global Education Summit to push forward progress on girls' education. At COP26 we shone a spotlight on the links between education and climate and called for countries to prioritise early learning in their efforts to mitigate climate change. In Afghanistan the UK has called for girls' right to secondary education to be restored, and UK humanitarian funds are helping provide safe spaces for learning for 38,000 displaced children, including 28,000 girls.</p><p>As of mid-December, more than 647 million school children were still affected by partial or full school closures. Ministers are pressing national governments to reopen schools as a matter of priority, while our bilateral education programmes and flagship Girls' Education Challenge continue to support children to catch-up on the learning they have lost. On 26 January the UK helped launch a new report by the Global Education Evidence Advisory Panel focused on recovering children's education, as part of our commitment to increase the global evidence base for education reform.</p>

star this property answer text <p>At this year’s UN General Assembly, the UK announced £515 million in new support to help get over 12 million children – half of them girls – into school. This includes a £300 million pledge for the innovative new International Finance Facility for Education that will help mobilise an additional $5 billion of investment for education in Africa and Asia, with a focus on the most marginalised children.</p><p> </p><p>This funding, in line with the Prime Minister’s pledge to make sure all girls have 12 years of quality education, will give millions of girls around the world the chance to go to school, supporting economic growth and improving women’s rights.</p><p> </p><p>More broadly, the UK is committed to promoting gender equality and protecting and empowering adolescent girls, and we also announced a new £600 million aid package to provide millions more women and girls in the developing world access to family planning.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Coping with climate change is a challenge that faces us all and it is having wide ranging effects on economies, livelihoods, access to education and natural resources. The poorest communities, and girls and women within them, are likely to be hardest hit, which is why we are investing in building the resilience of the world’s poorest by doubling our International Climate Finance which since 2011, has helped 57 million people cope with the effects of climate change.</p><p>We know that girls are two and half times more likely to be out of school in emergencies, including climate related emergencies. That’s why at the G7 Summit in 2019, the Prime Minister announced an unprecedented £90 million commitment for education in emergencies over 4½ years. This included £85 million to Education Cannot Wait the global fund for education in emergencies. UK support has helped the fund reach over a million of the most vulnerable girls, including those affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The £90 million investment is a key plank of the PM’s plan to ensure more girls benefit from 12 years of education.</p><p>As the leading global actor on girl’s education, we will continue to make substantial investments supporting marginalised girls in education. The UK’s Flagship Girls’ Education Challenge, the largest global fund to girls’ education, is now supporting up to 1.5 million girls across 17 countries.</p>

star this property answer text <p>UNESCO’s Institute for Statistics (UIS) estimates that around 100 million girls of lower and upper secondary school age were out-of-school globally in 2019. Whilst the number of children living in emergencies has increased in the last decade, no reliable estimates currently exist for the proportion of adolescent girls who are out- of- school and affected by emergencies. DFID is supporting the UNESCO UIS and other partners to improve global data sources related to SDG4. In 2015, the Global Education Monitoring Report estimated that girls were two and a half times more likely to be out of school in conflict-affected countries.</p><p>Supporting delivery of SDG 4 by promoting 12 years of quality education for all children, especially girls, by 2030 is a top priority for the UK Government.</p> more like this
