Welsh ports will benefit from leaving the transition period as it ensures that we take back control of our laws, trade, borders and money on the basis of the agreement we reached in October and which enabled us to leave the EU on 31 January.</p><p> </p><p>Furthermore, on 12 June, the Government committed to building new border facilities in Great Britain for carrying out required checks, such as customs compliance, transit, and Sanitary and Phytosanitary (SPS) checks, as well as providing targeted support to ports to build new infrastructure. Where there is no space at ports for new infrastructure, the Government will build new inland sites where these checks and other activities will take place. The Government is consulting with ports across the UK including Holyhead and Fishguard to agree what infrastructure is required. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/11/2019 answer text <p>Clause 21 of the European Union (Withdrawal) Bill would allow the UK Government to meet fully the obligations set out in the Northern Ireland Protocol. The “Henry VIII” power in the clause could be used where necessary to amend primary legislation to ensure arrangements required in the Northern Ireland Protocol are operational and to implement the requirements set out in the Protocol.</p><p> </p><p>In response to concerns raised by the Devolved Administrations, clause 18 of the Bill (<em>Main power in connection with other separation issues</em>) has been restricted so that powers under this clause cannot be used to amend the devolution acts, including the Government of Wales Act 2006.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is working to establish whether restricting the powers in clause 21 in a similar way would mean the obligations in the Protocol could still be met. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 09/02/2021 answer text <p>There has been a reduced flow of freight traffic at ports across the UK since the end of the Transition Period and imposition of tighter restrictions to tackle Covid-19, including at Welsh ports. However, traffic flows are now gradually increasing – in fact, roll-on/roll-off freight flow at Welsh ports increased each week in January.</p><p>We recognise the need to provide as much support to the haulage sector as possible to smooth the transition to new trading arrangements. The Government has introduced a range of measures to help the industry meet new export requirements, including training, webinars and extensive guidance on GOV.UK. We are similarly ramping up communication and engagement efforts to ensure that traders are confident using Welsh routes. It is the UK’s second busiest ‘Roll on-Roll off’ port and its commercial freight tonnage is increasing year on year. It is vital to the UK economy and specifically to North Wales, the North of England and the Midlands.</p><p> </p><p>It is therefore positive that the North Wales Growth Deal, which is jointly funded by the UK and Welsh Governments, is currently expected to invest significantly into developing the port’s infrastructure. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/01/2020 answer text <p>Last week, the National Lottery Heritage Fund announced that Old College, Aberystwyth has been awarded almost £10 million of National Lottery money. The National Lottery Heritage Memorial Fund, which allocates Lottery funds to heritage, is a non-departmental public body accountable to parliament through the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport. The mechanism in which funding decisions are made on individual applications and policies are independent of the Government. The National Lottery Heritage Fund is the distributor. This funding commitment builds on the investment of over £400million of National Lottery funding into more than 2,600 heritage projects in Wales.</p><p> </p><p>The investment in Old College will generate around 50 new jobs and encourage graduates to stay in Aberystwyth to establish new businesses, boosting the local economy. The renovation will create gallery spaces, a centre for entrepreneurs and new businesses, artist studios, community rooms and facilities for major events and festivals. This investment will give the building a new lease of life, securing a sustainable future for generations to come.
