	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 11/02/2020 answer text <p>The UK is committed to supporting Bahrain's oversight bodies, including the Ministry of Interior Ombudsman and the independent Special Investigations Unit. The support we provide to these bodies contributes to the development of both their capacity and capabilities. We have provided assistance in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme contributing to their work to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 16 (strengthening institutions and increasing access to justice).</p><p>The capability of these bodies to hold government departments to account has been demonstrated through the prosecution of at least 97 police officers, accused of human rights violations. It was as a result of an investigation by the oversight bodies, that the cases of Mohammed Ramadhan and Hussain Moosa were referred back to the Court of Cassation, leading to a re-trial in the Court of Appeal.</p><p>I have publicly reiterated my concern about the death sentences handed down to Husain Moosa and Mohammed Ramadhan. When we invest in energy, including in oil and gas, we do that to support development and the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals.</p><p>DFID does not provide ODA bilateral assistance for coal and has not done so since 2012. It is not possible to provide separate figures for assistance for oil and for gas.</p><p>In the Multilateral Development Banks (MDB) we do not support coal projects expect in rare circumstances and only for the poorest countries where there is no economical alternative. The Foreign Secretary has not made representations to his counterpart specifically on these cases because they do not involve British nationals. The UK regularly raises human rights with the Iranian authorities at all levels and we continue to take action with the international community to press Iran to improve its poor record on all human rights issues. Any report of the use of torture to extract forced confessions is extremely concerning. Iran does not recognise dual nationality and therefore does not permit consular access to British-Iranian detainees. We are committed to ensuring that we do everything we can to secure Mr Tahbaz's release, including continuing to press the Iranian authorities for exceptional consular access. The Prime Minister raised his concerns about dual national detentions with President Rouhani on 24 September, and the Foreign Secretary did so with Foreign Minister Zarif on 13 November. Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon hosted an event at the UN General Assembly on 25 September to call out the failings of the Iranian judiciary. The British Government is clear that those individuals who have fought for, or supported Daesh, whatever their nationality, should face justice through a fair trial in the most appropriate jurisdiction. The UK will work with international partners, as well as partners in the region who can assist in establishing an appropriate pathway to justice within their territory or legal systems.
