	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/05/2019 answer text <p>NHS Improvement is leading a national retention programme across the National Health Service with an initial focus on improving retention of the nursing workforce, as well as the mental health clinical workforce.</p><p>To date 110 trusts have completed the NHS Improvement Direct Support Programme. NHS Improvement is currently working with an additional 35 trusts and will be expanding the programme across the NHS and providing support to all remaining NHS trusts in England.</p><p>The latest data from the University and College Admissions Service (February 2019) shows that there has been a 4.5% increase in applicants to nursing or midwifery courses at English universities when compared to this time last year (2018).</p><p> </p><p>The NHS Long Term Plan, published on 7 January 2019, sets out a vital strategic framework to ensure that over the next 10 years the NHS will have the staff it needs. This will ensure that nurses are able to offer the expert compassionate care that they are committed providing. To ensure a detailed plan that everyone in the NHS can get behind my Rt. hon. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/06/2019 answer text <p>The education funding reforms, which came into force in 2017, unlocked the cap which constrained the number of pre-registration nursing, midwifery and allied health profession training places allowing more students to gain access to nurse degree training courses.</p><p> </p><p>Health Education Institutes (HEIs) are autonomous private institutions and are responsible for setting the number of training places they offer. It is for HEIs to work as part of their local health economy to secure training places.</p><p>The Department does not hold information on the level of pre-registration undergraduate nursing places filled at individual HEIs, compared with the number of places they made available in the given period.</p><p>The Office for Students publishes annual data on the number of entrants onto pre-registration nursing undergraduate nursing courses broken down by individual HEIs. The latest published data from the University and Colleges Admissions Service from February 2019 shows that there has been a 4.5% increase in applicants to nursing or midwifery courses at English universities when compared to this time last year in 2018. However, we know that there is further work to do with the education and healthcare sector to ensure that students continue to apply for these places.</p><p> </p><p>The NHS Long Term Plan set out the next step in our mission to make the National Health Service a world class employer and deliver the nursing workforce the NHS needs. Working with the National Health Service we have created a complete apprentice pathway from entry level Healthcare Support Worker to Nursing Associate to Nurse and onto postgraduate advanced clinical practice in nursing. This will support people from all backgrounds to enter a nursing career in the NHS.</p><p>Apprentice nurses will complete the same nursing degree as fulltime university students.</p><p>Health Education England (HEE) is leading a national Nursing Associate programme with a commitment for up to 7,500 Nursing Associates to enter training in 2019. This expansion builds on HEE’s Nursing Associate programme which has already seen thousands start training in 2017 and 2018.</p><p>HEE is also working with employers to support the development of a pipeline of future trainee Nursing Associates by investing in functional skills in English and Maths. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 05/07/2019 answer text <p>The Government has no plans to reinstate bursaries for pre-registration nursing degree students.</p><p>The education funding reforms unlocked the cap which constrained the number of pre-registration nurse training places allowing more students to gain access to nurse degree training courses. Eligible pre-registration nursing students now receive at least 25% more support than under the National Health Service bursary system through tuition fee loans and living cost support from the Student Loans Company.</p><p>Additionally, to support pre-registration nursing students whilst attending the clinical placement element of their courses, the Government introduced a Learning Support Fund. Eligible loan funded students can apply for annual payments of £1,000 for child dependants allowance, reimbursement of all clinical placement travel costs above their usual daily travel and exceptional hardship payments of up to £3,000. These are in addition to the allowances paid by the Student Loans Company.</p><p>On 7 February 2019 the University and College Admissions Service (UCAS) published data on full-time undergraduate applicants to nursing and midwifery courses made by the 15 January deadline.
