We are working with the sector, the unions and devolved administrations to support the UK steel sector to develop a long-term sustainable future for the UK steel industry. My Department commissioned independent research to identify high value opportunities for UK steel, worth up to £3.8 billion a year by 2030.</p><p> </p><p>In the 2018 Budget, the Government announced an Industrial Energy Transformation Fund with investment of £315 million to help businesses with high energy use to cut their bills and transition UK industry to a low carbon future.</p><p> </p><p>Since 2013, the Government has provided more than £312m in compensation to the steel sector to make energy costs more competitive, including over £53 million during 2018. We are working hard to make sure that UK producers of steel have the best possible chance of competing for and winning contracts across all Government procurement. Since 2016, all Government departments and arms-length bodies are required to consider socio-economic and environmental factors when procuring steel.</p><p> </p><p>The recent announcement of two important new funding programmes will help the steel industry in its efforts to remain competitive while reducing emissions and supporting the decarbonisation of the UK economy to achieve our ambitious 2050 net-zero targets: the £250m Clean Steel Fund and the planned £100m Low Carbon Hydrogen Production Fund.</p> answering member constituency Stratford-on-Avon answering member printed Nadhim Zahawi question first answered 07/10/2019 13:18:47 answering member 4113 label Biography information for Nadhim Zahawi

As my Rt. Hon. Friend the Prime Minister has said, we will gradually refine the economic and social restrictions at the appropriate time.</p><p> </p><p>The Department has been looking at how we can ensure workplaces are safe - for those in work now and for those who will go back to work once the measures in place are relaxed.</p><p> </p><p>As this work is complex and multifaceted, we are working with industry, business representative organisations, unions, Public Health England, and the Health and Safety Executive. Together, we are considering what is needed to adapt workplaces to further improve safety, thereby minimising the risk of transmission.</p><p> </p><p>Through this engagement activity, we are welcoming views and best practice that might support us in ensuring that businesses can reopen whilst adhering to the social distancing guidelines. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 21/06/2021 answer text <p>The UK Government has secured early access to 397 million vaccine doses through supply agreements with six separate vaccine developers, of which four have received regulatory approval and three are currently in deployment. This includes agreements with:</p><ul><li>Pfizer/BioNTech for 100 million doses</li><li>University of Oxford/AstraZeneca for 100 million doses</li><li>Moderna for 17 million doses</li><li>Novavax for 60 million doses</li><li>Janssen for 20 million doses</li><li>Valneva for 100 million doses</li></ul><p>In addition, the Government has a reservation agreement with GlaxoSmithKline/Sanofi Pasteur for 60 million doses and a non-binding agreement with CureVac for 50 million doses.</p><p> </p><p>We are in constant contact with the vaccine manufacturers and are confident that the supply of vaccines to the UK will not be disrupted and that we will meet the vaccination targets set out by my Rt. Hon. Friend the Prime Minister on 14 June:</p><ul><li>All adults aged 18 and over to be offered a first dose by 19 July, 2 weeks earlier than planned.</li><li>By 19 July, all those aged over 50 and the clinically extremely vulnerable to have been offered their second dose.</li><li>Second doses for all over 40s will be accelerated by reducing the dosing interval from 12 weeks to 8 weeks. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/05/2021 answer text <p>The UK Government has made available £4.8 million, subject to business case and other approvals, to support the development of the Holyhead Hydrogen Hub. The project proposes a hydrogen pilot production plant that would supply hydrogen fuel to the heavy goods and maritime vehicle markets on Ynys Môn. Officials are liaising with the developer and expect to consider the business case for the project in due course.</p><p> </p><p>Hydrogen is expected to play a key role in transport decarbonisation, but it is likely to be most effective in the areas ‘that batteries cannot reach’, where energy density requirements or duty cycles and refuelling times make it the most suitable low carbon energy source. This might include its use in heavy goods vehicles, buses, rail, shipping and aviation. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 06/07/2020 answer text <p>We have regular discussions with Airbus on a wide range of issues, including their announcement of plans to reduce their global workforce as a result of significantly reduced demand for aircraft due to the Covid-19 pandemic.</p><p> </p><p>Aerospace companies are drawing upon the unprecedented package of Government support measures, including schemes to raise capital, flexibilities with tax bills, and financial support for employees. Aerospace is benefiting from over £6 billion of support; airlines and aerospace companies, including Airbus, have benefited from over £2 billion of support from the Bank of England Covid Corporate Financing Facility. These companies will also access over £500 million of research and development grants over the next three years. In addition, UK Export Finance expects to support £3.5 billion of support for aerospace exports over the next 18 months. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 23/03/2021 answer text <p>The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy use emission projections[1] for different sectors of the economy including for Iron and Steel out to 2040 (see Annex C: Carbon dioxide emissions by IPCC). The emission projections show the Iron and Steel sector has carbon emissions of 9 Mt CO<sub>2</sub>e by 2040.</p><p>The Department has published an Industrial Decarbonisation Strategy[2] which presents two options for decarbonisation of the Iron and Steel Industry by 2050:</p><p>i) The first option shows the abatement potential of carbon capture utilisation and storage (abatement of 6.7 Mt CO<sub>2</sub>e);</p><p>ii) A second option of fuel switching to hydrogen and electric arc furnace.
