The guidelines apply to exposures at frequencies up to 300 GHz, well above the maximum few tens of GHz frequencies anticipated for use by 5G systems.</p><p>Health and safety legislation requires companies deploying and operating communication networks to carry out suitable and sufficient risk assessments, as well as put in place measures to reduce the identified risks so far as reasonably practicable. In controlling risks arising from radio wave exposure, the Health and Safety Executive refer to compliance with the ICNIRP guidelines. The Recommendation incorporates exposure restrictions from the International Commission on Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP), as advised by Public Health England (PHE).</p><p>An overview of the radio wave exposure restrictions applied in a range of countries has been provided by the World Health Organization (WHO) at the following link:</p><p><a href="http://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.main.EMFLIMITSPUBLICRADIOFREQUENCY?lang=en" target="_blank">http://apps.who.int/gho/data/node.main.EMFLIMITSPUBLICRADIOFREQUENCY?lang=en</a></p><p>This shows that the majority of countries are following the ICNIRP guidelines (41 volts per meter at 900 MHz and 58 volts per meter at 1,800 MHz).</p><p>PHE is a collaborating body in WHO’s International EMF Project, which brings together organisations from around the world to share information on this topic. Public Health England is reviewing problems associated with prescription medicine use, including opioids. The FSA has and continues to attend and organise stakeholder meetings to promote awareness of the guidance.</p><p> </p><p>FSA operational staff and local authorities have also been briefed on the guidance so that they can promote awareness directly with food business operators.
