	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 31/03/2020 answer text <p>The Government is committed to supporting the UK’s leadership in science and innovation, and set out an ambition to increase economy-wide investment in R&amp;D to 2.4% of GDP by 2027.</p><p> </p><p>At the 2020 Budget, the Government announced that it would increase public investment in R&amp;D to £22bn by 2024-25, the largest ever increase in support for R&amp;D. This will support innovators and researchers across the UK to develop their brilliant ideas, cutting edge technologies and ground breaking research.</p><p> </p><p>The majority of this uplift will be allocated at the Spending Review, including support for various R&amp;D programmes. Evidence shows that countries with higher Research and Development (R&amp;D) activity tend to have higher productivity. The latest evaluations published by HMRC show that while the R&amp;D expenditure credit scheme for large companies generates £2.40-£2.70 of additional R&amp;D expenditure for each £1 of tax relief claimed, the small and medium enterprise scheme generates £0.60-£1.28 for each £1 of tax relief claimed.</p><p> </p><p>The Government continues to consider other areas for reform as part of the ongoing review, in addition to the announcements set out at Autumn Budget 2021. Both are available to loss-makers as well as profit-makers.</p><p>The estimated total number of R&amp;D tax credit claims for the year ending March 2020 was 85,900, with total support claimed £7.4 billion. This corresponds to £47.5 billion of R&amp;D expenditure.</p><p>The Government is currently undertaking a review of the reliefs.
