	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 28/09/2022 answer text <p>BEIS received its largest ever R&amp;D budget at Spending Review 2021 with £39.8 billion over the SR period, including an allocation of £25.1 billion to UK Research Innovation (UKRI) which provides significant funding to the aforementioned areas.</p><p> </p><p>Specific funding amounts are not allocated to disease areas in advance as funding is largely distributed via competitive, peer-reviewed application processes.</p><p> </p><p>However, the Government has committed via the Life Sciences Vision to launch healthcare missions, including in Dementia and Cancer. Innovate UK’s core programmes budget is due to increase year on year throughout the current spending review period (FY22/23 to FY24/25) to £1.1bn by FY24/25, an increase of 66% on FY21/22</p><p> </p><p>All IUK programmes will be subject to its new Impact Management Framework that will demonstrate clear value for money and evidence of impact.</p><p> </p><p>The amount of funding going to Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) will be dependent on circumstances around specific competitions and collaborations but will continue to play a vital role in IUK’s portfolio. The Department maintains close oversight of the funding of the UK R&amp;D landscape, including working with our partner organisations and key R&amp;D-intensive sectors to understand the challenges they face.</p><p> </p><p>Most public Research &amp; Development (R&amp;D) funding is spent domestically, and the impact of currency fluctuations is therefore limited in these areas. However, exchange rate volatility does have a significant impact on certain programmes, including UK contributions to international research infrastructures and organisations. The Innovation Strategy set out the steps Government is taking to create the conditions for businesses – including overseas firms – to invest in UK innovation. Recent investments include Moderna’s commitment to building a new mRNA manufacturing and R&amp;D centre in the UK, in a deal valued at £1 billion</p><p> </p><p>The Growth Plan will help to unlock billions of pounds of additional investment into UK science and technology firms. This includes establishing Investment Zones, expanding R&amp;D tax reliefs and introducing the Long-term Investment for Technology &amp; Science (LIFTS) competition. At the UK-EU Specialised Committee meeting on 22 September, we once again requested that the EU fulfil its obligation to finalise the UK’s association to Horizon Europe. It is regrettable that the EU declined this request. We are now considering next steps, as our priority is to support the UK’s world leading R&amp;D sector.</p><p>At the 2021 Spending Review, the then Chancellor of the Exchequer set out that in the event we are unable to associate, we will use the funding allocated to Horizon Europe to build on our existing R&amp;D programmes with a new UK research, infrastructure and innovation alternative to Horizon.
