	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/07/2019 answer text <p>In alignment with the Global Goal for education (SDG4), DFID is helping tackle the learning crisis: millions of children unable to read and do maths despite years at school. DFID works to strengthen the quality of education and the effectiveness of education systems so that all children have access and opportunity to learn.</p><p> </p><p>UNESCO is the UN’s specialized agency for education and UN lead on SDG4. DFID works with UNESCO towards our shared goal of ensuring quality education for all. DFID provides a voluntary contribution of £7.8m to support the UNESCO Institute of Statistics (UIS) and the UNESCO published Global Education Monitoring Report (GEM Report). The UIS provides comparable, publicly available data on learning outcomes. The GEM Report is an independent, policy focused monitoring report, it is a key tool for pushing progress towards the Global Goals.</p><p> </p><p>Our support to the UIS and the GEM Report is being used to create vital data, evidence and tools to assess whether children are learning, who is being left behind and whether SDG4 is being achieved. Currently there is a global education crisis with 244 million children out of school. We therefore make significant investments through global funds to support delivery at scale to reach the 40 million target. We pledged £430 million to the Global Partnership for Education in 2021, and £80 million to Education Cannot Wait in February 2023. The report recommended FCDO accelerate work with partner governments to improve its ability to collect and use good data on children's learning. As a result, we have developed a new Data for Foundational Learning programme, of up to £27 million (2023 - 2027), to strengthen the data on children's learning in low- and middle-income countries. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 22/07/2022 answer text <p>In 2021, we co-hosted the Global Education Summit with Kenya which raised an unprecedented $4 billion for the Global Partnership for Education and used our G7 leadership to obtain endorsement for the two global objectives to get 40 million more girls into school and 20 million more girls reading by age ten by 2026. Through our COP Presidency we highlighted the importance of girls' education for responding to the climate crisis. We are working with likeminded partners to build a global coalition on foundational learning for all and to ensure strong outcomes from the Transforming Education Summit in September.</p><p>We are delivering on our commitments at country level including new programmes announced over the past year in Rwanda, Jordan, Tanzania and Bangladesh. The UK is committed to supporting this through the global education funds. We are the largest donor to the Global Partnership for Education (GPE), pledging £430 million in 2021. We pledged £80 million to Education Cannot Wait (ECW) in February 2023. We have been at the forefront of developing the new International Finance Facility for Education. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 30/01/2020 answer text <p>Coping with climate change is a challenge that faces us all and it is having wide ranging effects on economies, livelihoods, access to education and natural resources. The poorest communities, and girls and women within them, are likely to be hardest hit, which is why we are investing in building the resilience of the world’s poorest by doubling our International Climate Finance which since 2011, has helped 57 million people cope with the effects of climate change.</p><p>We know that girls are two and half times more likely to be out of school in emergencies, including climate related emergencies. That’s why at the G7 Summit in 2019, the Prime Minister announced an unprecedented £90 million commitment for education in emergencies over 4½ years. This included £85 million to Education Cannot Wait the global fund for education in emergencies. UK support has helped the fund reach over a million of the most vulnerable girls, including those affected by Cyclone Idai in Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. The £90 million investment is a key plank of the PM’s plan to ensure more girls benefit from 12 years of education.</p><p>As the leading global actor on girl’s education, we will continue to make substantial investments supporting marginalised girls in education. Whilst the number of children living in emergencies has increased in the last decade, no reliable estimates currently exist for the proportion of adolescent girls who are out- of- school and affected by emergencies. DFID is supporting the UNESCO UIS and other partners to improve global data sources related to SDG4. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/03/2020 answer text <p>The Girls’ Education Challenge (GEC) Phase 2, launched in 2017, aims to reach 1.5 million marginalised and highly marginalised girls.</p><p>GEC projects are currently reaching approximately 468,000 girls aged between 5 and 11; approximately 732,000 girls and young women aged between 12 and 19; and 85,000 young women aged between 20 and 24.</p><p>A further 15,000 girls aged 10-19 are supported by a project in Mozambique which does not record age breakdown.</p><p>Up to 190,000 girls are also being supported through GEC ‘Leave No Girl Behind’ projects, focused on highly marginalised adolescent girls who have dropped out of or never attended school. These projects started delivering in 2019 and data is being collected during 2020 on the numbers and characteristics of the girls reached.
