star this property answer text
The FCDO is committed to addressing barriers to education. An essential part of this is engaging with children, particularly girls, on the issues that affect them. In May 2023, officials met with adolescent girls to hear about the barriers to education they are facing, including early marriage, gender-based violence, poverty and conflict. Girls' Clubs, implemented through the UK's Girls' Education Challenge projects, consult students on the barriers they face to education and how best to overcome them. Club members in the Somali Girls' Education Promotion Programme achieved significantly higher gains in learning - 6.6 percentage points over and above their peers.
more like this

star this property answer text
Ensuring 12 years of quality education for all children is an FCDO priority. We have made significant investments through global funds to achieve this, pledging £430 million to the Global Partnership for Education in 2021, as well as £80 million to Education Cannot Wait in February 2023 and £10 million for projects to support education in emergencies. Last year we launched the Commitment to Action on foundational learning to reduce learning poverty by 50 percent by 2030. We run bilateral education programmes in 19 countries and our Girls' Education Challenge programme has given 1.6 million marginalised girls access to quality education.
more like this

star this property answer text
The 2022 Independent Commission for Aid Impact report rated the FCDO's education results between 2015-2020 as 'green/amber', demonstrating the effectiveness of our programmes in supporting a decent education for children. The report recommended FCDO accelerate work with partner governments to improve its ability to collect and use good data on children's learning. As a result, we have developed a new Data for Foundational Learning programme, of up to £27 million (2023 - 2027), to strengthen the data on children's learning in low- and middle-income countries. Additionally, we are working to improve our results framework to better measure impact on improving learning.
more like this

star this property answer text
The UK is one of the most generous global aid donors, spending £11 billion in 2021, much of it through FCDO interventions. We will focus future spend in line with the International Development Strategy, particularly focusing on support for women and girls, while maximising value for money and flexibility to respond to new priority issues. Development is not only about Official Development Assistance. UK support to global education also includes valuable partnerships and the power to convene others, such as through our co-hosting of the Global Education Summit in 2021, which raised $4 billion for the Global Partnership for Education.
more like this
