star this property answer text <p>The Government provides grants worth £15.6m per year to support rail and water freight services which deliver environmental and economic benefits over road transport, but whose operating costs are higher. This level is net of a significant efficiency saving implemented since 2015.</p><p> </p><p>Rail flows of intermodal freight continue to be healthy and the grants deliver high value for money. A research project is underway to inform decisions about future funding and operation of the grants and will consider stakeholder feedback.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Network Rail has a statutory duty to ensure that the railways remain safe throughout the year, and are therefore expected to intervene to address imminent safety risks or hazards that present themselves at the lineside, whenever this may be the case. As part of fulfilling this duty, Network Rail work with independent ecologists and arborists to identify nesting birds and protected species before commissioning any devegetation work, so that appropriate mitigation can be put in place to protect them and minimise disturbance.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government understands the importance of accessible on-board information in helping bus passengers to travel with confidence, and in Summer 2018 published a public consultation on proposals to require its provision on local bus services throughout Great Britain.</p><p> </p><p>We continue to analyse responses to the consultation and expect to announce our next steps regarding the making of Regulations and publication of guidance later in the year.</p><p> </p><p>In the meantime we are encouraging bus companies to improve the provision of accessible information onboard their services without waiting for the Regulations, and we have committed to supporting smaller operators to do this, with £2m of targeted funding.</p><p> </p> more like this

The Government recognises the importance of supporting those participating in model aircraft flying, and the strong safety culture fostered by the majority of model aircraft flyers and clubs.</p><p> </p><p>However, as set out in the Government’s drone consultation response in January 2019, any alternative approach for model flyers must be achieved without imposing undue burden on the state and the taxpayer, whilst also being efficient and enforceable, without compromising the integrity of the policy.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The upcoming UK Unmanned Aircraft Operator Registration and Education Scheme is not directly comparable with the French registration scheme as it does not currently have an education or testing element. The proposed charge for the UK scheme balances keeping the charge for registration as low as possible with ensuring that the scheme funds itself and does not impose undue burden on the state or the taxpayer. The annual renewal period proposed under the UK scheme will be regularly reviewed by the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure it remains fit for purpose.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Department for Transport Ministers and officials have regular discussions with the CAA, including on the Drone Operator Registration Scheme and competency testing requirements, which will apply from November 2019. <ins class="ministerial">These will apply to all those in the UK operating drones or model aircraft between 250 grams and 20 kilograms.</ins> <del class="ministerial">These will apply to all unmanned aircraft below 250g, including drones and model aircraft.</del></p><p> </p><p>These are part of a package of measures to address the safety and security challenges that unmanned aircraft pose. They will help law enforcement agencies to tackle the misuse of such aircraft effectively, alongside new Police powers to be introduced in the forthcoming Drones Bill.</p><p> </p><p> </p> more like this
