star this property answer text <p>There is no policy preventing engagement between British diplomats and UK parliamentarians. While posts must prioritise resources for the delivery of HMG business, if a parliamentarian makes a request for support this will be considered on a case-by-case basis. The overseas network aims to provide appropriate support for parliamentarians, including a high-level of support for select committees travelling overseas. As per my previous answer (16041), all engagement with Parliamentarians must adhere to the principle of political impartiality and follow the correct clearance processes as outlined in the Civil Service code and Directory of civil service guidance.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p><del class="ministerial">The UK has diplomatic representation present in 160 countries recognised by the UK Government. This number periodically changes for political and operational reasons. It excludes countries in which we have closed or temporarily suspended a Post in country, which may operate elsewhere. The UK also has representation present in 15 territories, which includes 12 UK Overseas Territories.</del></p><p><del class="ministerial">The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) publishes a full list of locations in which the UK has a diplomatic presence on GOV.UK at www.gov.uk/government/publications/list-of-foreign-office-posts. This list is regularly updated.</del></p><p><ins class="ministerial">The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office publishes details of foreign embassies, high commissions and consulates in the UK on GOV.UK at www.gov.uk/government/publications/foreign-embassies-in-the-uk.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">This page includes the London Diplomatic List (LDL), which contains details of all embassies and high commissions, as well as the names of heads of mission and other diplomatic agents appointed in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.</ins></p><p><ins class="ministerial">The LDL lists 171 diplomatic missions with their permanent seat in the UK; and 17 non-resident diplomatic missions.</ins></p>

star this property answer text <p>The FCDO's ambition is to be a truly inclusive organisation that reflects the diversity of the population we serve and we are proud to have almost closed the gender gap in overseas posts. 48 percent of FCDO staff currently posted overseas are women and 52 percent are men. We endeavour to close the gap with greater numbers of women joining the Senior Civil Service. Understanding any remaining barriers to progression for women and improving the representation of women in senior roles is a focus for FCDO this year.</p> more like this

(www.gov.uk/government/publications/list-of-foreign-office-posts). Published lists date back to October 2014 and are regularly updated, including changes made during the period of enquiry. The lists include all British Embassies, High Commissions and Consulates at the time of publication. Countries not included in a list did not have a permanent UK diplomatic presence at the time of publication.</p><p>The locations of HMG diplomatic presence are routinely scrutinised to ensure that the right people are in the right places to deliver UK priorities. HMG redeploy people and resources around the network as needed. A new British Trade Office will open in Almaty, Kazakhstan this year, reflecting a move towards greater engagement with clean energy and digital technology sectors. It replaces our Trade Office in Atyrau, which closed last year. A new office is planned to open in Dodoma to reflect the relocation of the Government of Tanzania from Dar Es Salaam to the capital.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The FCDO provides information on the assistance we can provide, and to whom, in our publication: Support for British nationals abroad ( https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/support-for-british-nationals-abroad ). Each request for consular assistance is considered individually, with consular staff assessing an individual's needs in order to offer tailored assistance. We seek to prioritise those whom we assess as vulnerable and in most need of our help. Our public guide explains when we would consider someone vulnerable and provides information on the types of assistance the FCDO can provide, which will depend on the individual's circumstances. Assistance is provided in agreement with the recipient, and our staff keep family members updated on any assistance provided where we have consent to do so.</p> more like this

In the last decade, the UK's diplomatic network has expanded by over 10%, with over 16,000 staff around the world and in the UK. The FCDO is ensuring that we have the right people and skills to deliver the Integrated Review: though diplomatic, economic, development &amp; security partnerships; prioritising Euro-Atlantic security and the Indo-Pacific Tilt; and recognising the need for a more agile workforce, prepared for future crises and able to deliver UK interests in a more contested and fragmented geopolitical context.</p> more like this
