The freedom to practise, change or share one’s faith or belief without discrimination or violent opposition is a fundamental human right that all people should enjoy. We believe that societies which aim to guarantee freedom of religion or belief are more stable, prosperous and more resilient against violent extremism. The UK last raised these issues with China at the UK/China Human Rights Dialogue in June 2017. more like this

We look to the Chinese authorities to provide comprehensive details of the circumstances surrounding his death. We have not made representations to the Chinese authorities on this specific case.</p><p>We are concerned by reports that a number of human rights defenders have died whilst in prison and allegations that they have been denied access to medical treatment. We raised our concerns directly with the Chinese authorities at the last round of the UK/China Human Rights Dialogue which took place in Beijing on 27 June 2017.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>​We remain deeply concerned by the misuse of the blasphemy laws and the treatment of minority religious communities in Pakistan. The blasphemy laws are used against people of all faiths although minority communities are disproportionately affected. This is particularly concerning given the harsh penalties for blasphemy, including the death penalty.</p><p>We regularly raise our concerns about the protection of minority communities and misuse of the blasphemy laws with the Government of Pakistan at a senior level, most recently during my visit to Pakistan in November 2017</p><p> </p> more like this

We issued an item IV statement at the 37th UN Human Rights Council on 14 March which reiterated our concerns about the situation in China. We also supported the EU item IV statement at the same session, which called on China to respect freedom of religion.</p><p>We raised our concerns about these issues directly with the Chinese authorities at the UK/China Human Rights Dialogue which took place in Beijing on 27 June 2017.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>​We remain concerned about restrictions on freedom of religion and belief in Pakistan, particularly the misuse of the blasphemy laws. Blasphemy laws are used against people of all faiths, although minority communities are disproportionately affected. Our concerns are reflected in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Annual Human Rights Report.</p><p>We regularly make clear our concerns about freedom of religion and belief and the protection of minority communities with the government of Pakistan. We do so at a senior level. During my visit to Pakistan last year, I raised our concerns about the treatment of religious minorities, including discrimination and violence against them, with the Federal Secretary of Pakistan's Ministry of Human Rights. My colleague, the Minister for Human Rights, Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon, raised the issues of freedom of religion and belief and the protection of minority religious communities with Pakistan's Interior Minister, Ahsan Iqbal, in February 2018.</p>

unstar this property answer text <p>​We regularly discuss the importance of respect for 'One Country, Two Systems' and Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy with representatives of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region and the Chinese Government. The Prime Minister discussed this issue with President Xi and Premier Li during her visit to China from 31 January to 2 February 2018.</p><p>The former First Secretary of State and Minister for the Cabinet Office, the Rt Hon. Damian Green MP, raised the issue with the Chief Executive of Hong Kong, Carrie Lam, during her visit to the UK from 20-22 September 2017.</p><p>It is essential for continued confidence in 'One Country, Two Systems', both in Hong Kong and internationally, that Hong Kong continues to enjoy, and is seen to enjoy, the high degree of autonomy and the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Basic Law and guaranteed in international law by the Joint Declaration.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>​We raised the case of the Panchen Lama, Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, at the UK-China Human Rights Dialogue which took place in Beijing on 27 June 2017. We called on the Chinese authorities to release evidence to reassure the international community of his current status and wellbeing.</p><p>We urge China to ensure that the restrictions on the Panchen Lama's freedom of movement and communication are lifted, so that he may select the career, education or religious life of his choosing. We continue to support calls by the UN Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Religion or Belief for the Chinese authorities to facilitate a meeting between the Panchen Lama and independent international observers.</p> more like this

At the UK-Vietnam Strategic Dialogue in January 2018, I expressed concern at the restrictions on civil and political rights in Vietnam, including freedom of expression and assembly, and stressed the need for the Vietnamese government to create space for civil society.
