star this property answer text While we have not made a recent assessment of this issue, freedom of religion and belief remains a human rights priority for this Government. It is a fundamental freedom which underpins many other human rights. Our Consulate General in Jerusalem regularly meets a variety of religious leaders in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and has stressed to the Palestinian Authority the importance of protecting freedom of religion and belief. more like this

star this property answer text The UK fully supports the UN Action Plan for Libya set out at the UN General Assembly by the Special Representative of the Secretary-General, Ghassan Salamé, and endorsed in the Security Council's Presidential Statement of 14 December 2017. The Action Plan envisages negotiations on limited amendments to the Libya Political Agreement, a National Conference, preparations for elections and the provision of humanitarian assistance where it is needed in Libya. The UK supports the Special Representative's emphasis on the importance of ensuring that elections, when they happen, are preceded by the necessary political, legislative and security preparations. more like this

star this property answer text
UK funding contributes to the salaries of individual vetted health and education Palestinian Authority (PA) public servants on the EU Palestinian-European Socio-Economic Management Assistance Mechanism (PEGASE) list, including PA teachers in the West Bank. It is the PA’s responsibility to deploy these vetted public servants to schools in the West Bank as they see fit. UK funding enables around 25,000 young Palestinians to receive an education annually. The UK government strongly condemns all forms of violence and hatred. Our partnership with the Palestinian Authority includes a commitment from the Palestinian leadership to adhere to the principle of non-violence and to tackle language and actions that could incite violence or hatred.
more like this

star this property answer text
The new Single Departmental Plan of the Department for International Development (DFID) puts the Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG2) at the centre of our work to eradicate extreme poverty, deliver inclusive economic development, including sustainable agricultural programmes and investments, and build resilience. Spend through our bilateral and multilateral agriculture programmes to reduce hunger and under-nutrition has increased, from £243million (2012) to £484 million (2015) and roughly £600 million in 2016. We are also working to shape the multilateral agenda. The Global Agriculture and Food Security Program (GAFSP) harnesses both public and private investments for SDG2 and implements through a range of multilateral institutions. DFID is a global leader in addressing acute hunger through humanitarian and famine relief. DFID has also committed to improve the nutrition of 50 million people overseas by 2020 and published a Position Paper setting out our plans. Total spend on nutrition-specific and nutrition-sensitive programmes has increased, from £304 million (2012) to £667 million (2015).

We are also supporting robust monitoring of progress against the agreed indicators for SDG2 to be achieved by 2030.

We will provide around £50 million in 2017/18 to assist UNRWA in their provision of basic education to around 500,000 children and health services for around 3 million Palestinian refugees as well as supporting Palestinian refugees from Syria with cash and in-kind food assistance. We are concerned at the impact on UNRWA’s activities whenever unexpected reductions or delays in predicted donor disbursements occur. The UK’s priority is to deliver a Compact that prioritises three fundamental principles for managing migration: 1) the international community must help ensure that refugees claim asylum in the first safe country that can offer protection; 2) Improve the ways we distinguish between refugees fleeing persecution and economic migrants; and 3) Maintain the right and obligation of all states to control their borders, and to accept the return of their nationals.
more like this

star this property answer text
It is standard practice for the UK Government to stay in regular contact with the US administration on a range of issues, including the Migration and Refugee Compacts. The UK – alongside partners – remains committed to the UN process to develop both a Global Compact for Migration and a Global Compact for Refugees. The decision by the United States to withdraw from the former does not alter the UK Government’s commitment to engage fully and work towards the successful delivery of these compacts. We believe that the Global Compact on Migration should offer an effective international framework to ensure that migration is safe and orderly and that it should balance the rights and responsibilities of both states and migrants. This should include states committing to the full implementation of the existing legal frameworks that protect fundamental human rights of their own citizens and of migrants.
more like this
