star this property answer text We regularly raise our concerns about the rights to freedom of expression, association and assembly with the Egyptian authorities; these rights are essential to improving the protection of Freedom of Religion or Belief in Egypt. The Egyptian constitution contains protections for Freedom of Religious Belief and it is important that these rights are respected. In particular, we welcome President Sisi's consistent calls for peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims in Egypt. The UK has also been working with al-Azhar University in Egypt for over ten years to help develop a new generation of religious leaders who can build dialogue across different cultures and religions, and confront extremism. The work includes English teaching, debating skills training and a postgraduate scholarship scheme. more like this

We regularly raise human rights concerns with the Bahraini authorities in private and in public and will continue to do so. We encourage the Government of Bahrain to deliver on its international and domestic human rights commitments. We encourage those with concerns about the treatment of prisoners in detention to report these to the relevant human rights oversight bodies. more like this

star this property answer text The Government is deeply concerned to hear reports of deaths and injuries in the Anglophone regions of Cameroon. There have been fatalities on both sides; a number of security forces personnel have been killed by protestors, and Amnesty International reported that 17 civilians were killed by security forces in October. There have been fewer reports of clashes recently and a heavy security presence remains in many Anglophone areas. The British High Commissioner in Yaoundé has raised our concerns about the situation in the Anglophone region, including the Government of Cameroon's obligations under international law in respect to human rights, with Prime Minister Philemon Yang on 22 November. In these and several other recent meetings with Cameroonian Ministers, he called on the Cameroonian Government to exercise restraint, enter into purposeful and inclusive dialogue and to take action to reduce tensions. more like this

The UK has also consistently raised its concerns at the Ceasefire Task Force meeting of the International Syria Support Group, attended by the Office of the Special Envoy for Syria. The Foreign Secretary made a statement in the House of Commons on 26 February regarding the tragic situation in Eastern Ghouta. He set out what actions the British Government is taking in response to the crisis, and called upon the Asad regime to respect the ceasefire demanded by UNSC resolution 2401 and allow delivery of aid to the enclave.
more like this

We remain gravely concerned by proposals to demolish the Bedouin community of Khan al-Ahmar which the UN has said could amount to ‘forcible transfer’, in violation of International Humanitarian Law. Following the decision of the Israeli Supreme Court on 5 September, the Foreign and Commonwealth Office issued a statement with France, Germany, Spain and Italy, reiterating our call to the Israeli Government not to go ahead with its plan to demolish the village – including its school – and displace its residents. We will continue to raise concerns with the Israeli authorities as opportunities arise.
more like this

star this property answer text
It is essential that the further education (FE) sector is able to recruit and retain excellent teachers if we are to achieve a world-class technical education system in England. Due to the independent nature of the FE sector, and government’s historical relationship with it, we do not have detailed data on FE teacher pay, or on the wider FE workforce.

We are undertaking work to understand the situation better, including the specific challenges and opportunities in relation to teacher recruitment and retention in the sector. This includes our recent College Staff Survey, which is helping us develop a better insight into the state of the teaching profession in FE and shows that more than half of all teachers have worked in the sector for ten years or more.

We want to support the recruitment and development of FE teachers. This year we have launched our £5 million Taking Teaching Further programme to help attract talented and inspiring people with industry expertise to teach in FE. We have also announced our £8 million new bespoke professional development offer, T level Professional Development, to help existing teachers and leaders successfully deliver T levels.

Further, we have recently commissioned research on identifying FE teacher comparators, and on incentive programmes for the recruitment and retention on FE teachers, to better inform our thinking. The reports, and the results of the College Staff Survey, are available at GOV.UK.
