However we recognise crowding is an issue and in 2016-17 the average percentage of prisoners in crowded accommodation was 24.5%.</p><p>Our reforms will see us close down and redevelop ageing prisons and deliver high-quality, modern establishments fit for today's demands. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 19/04/2017 answer text <p>The total amount of our funding to the Samaritans for 2017-18 has yet to be finalised, although we have confirmed already that they will receive the same amount as this year (£500k) to support the Listeners scheme, through which volunteer prisoners are trained to provide support to other prisoners in emotional distress. Founded in 1991, this is a very successful scheme through which over 90,000 face-to-face support meetings were facilitated in 2016.</p><p> </p><p>In addition to funding the Samaritans for the Listeners scheme, as part of plans to reduce levels of suicide and self-harm, we have agreed in principle to fund a number of other projects proposed by the Samaritans, and final decisions on the level of funding will be made by the end of the year. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 13/02/2017 answer text <p>Prisons employ a range of operational security measures aimed at keeping prisons safe and secure. Accommodation Fabric Checks (AFCs) support this by disrupting the ability of prisoners to store prohibited items in their cells either for their own purposes or on behalf of others. Each prison must assess the frequency of AFCs required to meet their own security and safety needs. Any reduction in the frequency of AFCs may be more effectively offset by targeted and intelligence led searches.</p><p> </p><p>There is no direct link between the frequency of AFCs and self-harm. Other than through ensuring the integrity of the cell, an AFC does not allow for any meaningful interaction between officer and prisoner.</p><p> </p><p>MoJ is investing an extra £100m annually to boost the frontline by 2,500 prison officers so that every prisoner will have a dedicated officer to support them.
