Of those, over 6 million people are facing severe food shortages, with households struggling to meet their daily needs. In particular, 1.8 million children are most at risk and require access to life-saving nutrition services. In Hodeidah city alone, UNICEF have warned that 96,000 severely malnourished children are at risk of dying.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The UK is one of the largest donors to the crisis in Yemen and has announced £55 million to respond to the humanitarian crisis in Yemen, focused on the most urgent life-saving needs. This is compounded by restrictions on imports of commercial and humanitarian supplies into the country, including fuel. This in turn is hampering the distribution of humanitarian supplies within country, including essential food and medicines.Of the 2.3 million internally displaced people in Yemen, to date UNHCR has provided emergency relief items to 147,386 of them since the end of March.</p><br /><p>The UK continues to call on all parties to facilitate rapid, safe and unhindered access to all people in need in Yemen. The UK is one of the largest donors to the crisis and has announced £75m to respond to the crisis in Yemen. UK aid is providing vital medical supplies, water, food and emergency shelter, working with trusted and impartial actors who have a strong track record in delivering assistance in difficult and dangerous places. According to UNOCHA, there are more people in need of humanitarian assistance in Yemen than in any other country. However, because of the conflict, it has been difficult for the UN to access all parts of Yemen to carry out humanitarian assessments. The UN data on the overall number of people and children in need are therefore estimates and should be treated accordingly.</p><br /><p>Over the last year, the UK has doubled its humanitarian commitment to Yemen to £75 million in 2015/16. The UK government uses this UN report as one of its primary data sources.</p><p> </p><p>The UK is the 4<sup>th</sup> largest donor to the crisis in Yemen and has more than doubled its humanitarian support over the last year to £85 million for 2015/16. The UK is funding the World Food Programme, who are supporting over 580,000 beneficiaries with food assistance. The Government continues to lobby all parties to facilitate rapid, safe and unhindered commercial and humanitarian access.</p><p>DFID is funding the UN Verification and Inspection Mechanism (UNVIM) to speed up the clearance process for shipments of essential food and fuel to Yemen. We are also funding the World Food Programme and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) to deliver food and treat severe malnutrition. This funding will meet immediate food needs for 2.5 million Yemenis, and is in addition to over £400 million in bilateral support since the conflict began in 2015.</p><p> </p><p>In the 2017/2018 financial year, the UK was the second-largest donor to the UN Humanitarian Appeal for Yemen and the third-largest humanitarian donor to Yemen overall, providing £205 million. This support aimed to provide enough food to meet immediate needs for 3.4 million people and fuel to mill enough wheat to feed a million people for over a year, as well as nutrition support for 1.7 million people, and clean water and sanitation for an expected 1.2 million people.</p><p> </p><p>Alongside our funding, the UK has taken a leading role in calling on all parties to the conflict to allow unhindered humanitarian and commercial access throughout Yemen. The UK welcomes the recent appointments of Martin Griffiths as the new UN Special Envoy to Yemen and Lise Grande as the new UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator for Yemen. The UK will continue to support their efforts to work with all parties to bring about peace and end the humanitarian crisis in Yemen.</p><p>The UK is also playing a leading role in finding a peaceful solution to the conflict. As the pen-holder on Yemen at the UN Security Council the UK proposed and coordinated a UN Security Council Presidential Statement adopted on 15 March, which called on all parties to comply with their obligations under international humanitarian law, facilitate humanitarian access, and emphasised the need for an inclusive political solution. The UK will continue to press for a political solution to the conflict in the next Quad meeting between the UK, US, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
