We are committed to electrifying the Great Western Swansea to Cardiff main line and are contributing £125mn to the Welsh Government’s Valley Lines electrification scheme. star this property answer text <p>An initial study has been undertaken to explore how to maximise, as far as reasonably practicable, the movement of material by rail at Euston. The study highlights a number of technical options which are now being assessed in detail with respect to their impact on passengers, their environmental and socio-economic impacts, and impacts on the HS2 programme. An initial decision on how to proceed will be made following the completion of this further assessment which is expected to be in advance of the HS2 Select Committee in the House of Lords hearing petitions in relation to Euston.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Dobwalls Bypass opened to traffic in December 2008 and included the construction of two purpose built bat bridges: Havett Farm Bridge and Lantoom Quarry Bridge. Sample monitoring of the effectiveness of the bridges has been undertaken. The surveys recorded 23 bat crossings over two days in June 2008, compared to a total of 39 bat crossings over two days in July 2014. The results of the surveys are not directly comparable as they were conducted in different months and at different times of day.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>As the Prime Minister stated on 24<sup>th</sup> June 2015, this Government is committed to the electrification of Great Western line from Swansea to Cardiff and on to London.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>The Secretary of State for Transport announced on the 25<sup>th</sup> June 2015 that Great Western was his top priority for delivery. The Secretary of State also described some of the challenges Network Rail is facing. That is why he has asked the new chair of Network Rail to put forward proposals for replanning the enhancement programme.  The chair is due to report to the Secretary of State in the Autumn and it would be wrong to pre-empt the outcome of this report.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Whilst merchant shipping is vital to the well-being of the country, individual vessels are not considered part of the UK’s critical national infrastructure, as this term tends to refer to fixed physical infrastructure. But transport as a whole is designated as a critical sector for the UK.</p><p> </p><p>The Department for Transport regularly liaises with both the ports and shipping industries to address cyber security concerns. A Code of Practice for Ports is scheduled to be published in July 2016. Research into cyber vulnerabilities on vessels has also taken place with the co-operation of shipping companies and it is anticipated that a Code of Practice will be published in due course. In the meantime, we are also working with the International Maritime Organization to address global concerns. Guidelines produced by industry are currently being discussed by the IMO and are available on the Baltic and International Maritime Council website.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Rail services between London and the Midlands are currently provided by the West Midlands and InterCity West Coast franchises. These franchises are due be replaced when they expire in October 2017 and April 2018 respectively. The Department has completed a consultation in respect of the replacement West Midlands franchise, and commenced another in respect of InterCity West Coast in May. The outcomes of those consultations will be used to inform what we ask the operator of the new franchise to provide. This information, including the key challenges and opportunities that the Department has identified for those franchises, will be published in due course.</p><p> </p><p>Neither consultation proposed cutting train services. We expect potential bidders to plan their train services to meet the needs of passengers at the stations they serve considering how best to serve and link markets and improve service reliability. To make sure their plans best reflect the needs of the franchise we are seeking views from the public and stakeholders on the ICWC franchise on:</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><ul><li>any direct journeys currently provided by ICWC that they would want to see protected at a minimum level; and</li><li>priorities for potential changes to train services, such as speeding up service for long-distance passengers, for example by changing stops at low-use stations or adjusting the level of service.</li></ul>
