star this property answer text <p>The Government is committed to tackling health harms from alcohol and to support the most vulnerable at risk from alcohol misuse. The Prevention Green Paper <em>Advancing our health: prevention in the 2020s</em> outlines how we will help people moderate their drinking by working with industry to deliver a significant increase in the availability of alcohol-free and low-alcohol products by 2025. The Government will engage with industry and other stakeholders around delivering this objective.</p><p>Lower socioeconomic status is associated with higher mortality for alcohol-attributable causes, despite lower socioeconomic groups often reporting lower levels of consumption. As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, we are establishing specialist Alcohol Care Teams in hospitals with the highest rates of alcohol harm. It is estimated that this will prevent 50,000 admissions over five years. Local authorities will also receive over £3 billion in 2019/20 to be used exclusively on public health including alcohol treatment services. Public Health England is supporting NHS England’s tobacco and alcohol commissioning for quality and innovation scheme, which encourages hospitals to screen all inpatients about their alcohol use and offer appropriate interventions.</p><p>The UK Chief Medical Officers issued Low Risk Drinking Guidelines in 2016 so that people could make informed choices about their own drinking and the Government has worked with industry to ensure information on the health harms of alcohol are printed clearly on the labelling of alcoholic drinks.</p><p>The Government has also made funding of £6 million available to support children who live with an alcohol dependent parent which will address the inequalities facing this vulnerable group.</p>

Current action to tackle alcohol-related harms includes working to address alcohol related domestic abuse through a training package for frontline professionals with the charity Against Violence and Abuse.</p> more like this

We continue to support and deliver programmes at both national and local levels to address harms including establishing Alcohol Care Teams in the hospitals with the highest rates of alcohol related admissions and a commitment in the Prevention Green paper to encourage drinking habits towards low and no alcohol products. The Department of Health and Social Care is working jointly with the Department for Work and Pensions investing £6 million on a programme of work which started in 2018/19, to improve outcomes and support for children whose parents are alcohol dependent. This includes nine local areas which are testing innovative and collaborative working; funding for voluntary sector organisations to develop new resources and training; a helpline and contact services for children, and funding several projects in the voluntary sector over 2020/21 to support those living with Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), and to reduce the number of alcohol exposed pregnancies to prevent new cases of FASD.</p>

The reforms of alcohol duty will, for the first time, tax all alcohol according to strength, helping to target problem drinking by taxing products associated with alcohol-related harm at a higher rate of duty. star this property answer text <p>We estimate the total cost of alcohol to society to be approximately £21 billion a year, including alcohol-related crime and health harms and the cost to the economy of lost productivity. The IEA report takes a very narrow view of the cost of alcohol harms, basing this only on the actual costs to government set against the revenue it receives in taxation. This fails to take account the wider costs to society, including the cost of treating alcohol abuse and supporting the victims of alcohol-related violent crime.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Local communities, services and businesses are best placed to tackle alcohol-related issues in their area and enforce the behaviour and develop the cultures that they want.</p><br /><p>As part of the health and care reforms, local government has been given the responsibility, backed by ring-fenced budgets, to improve people’s health – this includes responsibility for tackling problem drinking.</p><br /><p>We have given local authorities more than £8 billion in funding over three years so they can put the right services in place to help their communities to improve people’s health – this includes responsibility for tackling problem drinking. An example of where this has been done is by Balance, the North East Alcohol Office, who produced a report which details the impact of alcohol misuse on their region’s paramedics.</p> more like this
