The carriers are strategic maritime platforms which will perform a wide variety of military functions; for example: providing credible conventional deterrence; delivering carrier strike missions using Lightning II aircraft; enforcing no fly zones; deploying Royal Marine Commandos; building international partnerships; delivering humanitarian aid and disaster relief; and conducting complex non-combatant evacuation operations.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>In the last 12 months there have been no unauthorised incursions by any foreign military aircraft into sovereign air space around the UK, which projects 12 miles off shore or to mutually agreed mid-points between adjacent nations over narrow straits such as the Straits of Dover. In terms of recent Russian military aircraft activity which has attracted media attention, these aircraft have remained in international airspace at all times. The UK civil air traffic region and the NATO Air Policing Area, for which the UK have responsibility for monitoring, include large areas of international air space through which foreign military traffic may legally transit.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is just one organisation with a role in the security of the United Kingdom's (UK) territorial waters. To reflect this cross-Government responsibility, under the UK National Strategy for Maritime Security, a Ministerial working group, chaired by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, has been established to focus on maritime security in its entirety.</p><p> </p><p>Through the coordination of intelligence and information the National Maritime Information Centre (NMIC) provides the UK with a comprehensive picture of potential threats to UK maritime security and unified situational awareness of maritime activity in UK and international waters.</p><p> </p><p>The MOD contributes to HMG's efforts by providing multi-layered capability to deter incursions into territorial waters. This is delivered through a combination of surface ships, submarines and aircraft, alongside close co-ordination and co-operation with other Government Agencies and our allies.</p><p> </p><p>I am not prepared to disclose further details as this would, or would be likely to, prejudice the capability, effectiveness or security of the Armed Forces.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>
