LSO works closely with Invest Northern Ireland, along with the other devolved bodies and local enterprise partnerships across England, to understand the nation’s internationally competitive commercial offers in life sciences. We then actively market these strengths using our international network of investment advisors and suite of promotional materials. Government has also taken steps to strengthen protection for intellectual property in the UK.</p><p>In 2012 a specific organisation was set up to promote life sciences to international companies: the Life Sciences Investment Organisation (now reformed as the Life Sciences Organisation (LSO), with responsibility also for UK trade promotion). 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 02/09/2014 answer text <p>Bexsero, a Meningococcal group B vaccine, was licenced for the active immunisation of individuals from two months of age and older against invasive meningococcal disease caused by <em>Neisseria meningitidis</em> group B. It can be administered individually or concomitantly with a number of other vaccine antigens, either as monovalent or as combination vaccines such as diphtheria, tetanus, acellular pertussis, <em>Haemophilus influenzae </em> type b, inactivated poliomyelitis, hepatitis B, heptavalent pneumococcal conjugate, measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella. Its strategic clinical networks have a specific focus on patients with neurological problems, such as Parkinson’s disease. NHS trusts and care homes in England should have policies and procedures in place to ensure that people with Parkinson’s disease receive their medicines when they are required to take them to control their illness and symptoms.</p><p>NHS England has recently launched a medication ‘safety thermometer’ that enables health and care organisations to measure aspects of medication safety on a regular basis for improvement purposes. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 04/09/2014 answer text <p> </p><p>The Human Medicines Regulations 2012 as amended contain provisions for the import of unlicensed medicinal products to meet the special clinical needs of particular patients. The importer (who must hold a licence for that purpose) must notify the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) that such importation is taking place. The MHRA may object to the importation if there is a known safety or quality issue with the product, or if an equivalent United Kingdom-licensed product is available.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p> </p><p>Such products are used on the direct personal responsibility of the prescriber, who would retain clinical responsibility for the patient while prescribing the product in question.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>In primary care, prescribers are allowed to prescribe any product, including any unlicensed product, which they consider to be a medicine necessary for the treatment of their patients under the National Health Service, as long as that product is not included in Schedules 1 or 2 to the NHS (General Medical Services Contract) Regulations 2004 and that the prescriber is prepared to justify any challenges to their prescribing by the relevant commissioning organisation.</p><p> </p><p><strong> </strong></p><p>When a patient is being treated by a hospital the consultant can arrange for the supply of any product, even one not normally available on NHS prescription, provided the relevant commissioning organisation or NHS trust agrees to supply it at NHS expense.</p> answering member constituency Mid Norfolk answering member printed George Freeman question first answered 04/09/2014 13:25:54 answering member 4020 label Biography information for George Freeman

	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 01/09/2014 answer text <p> </p><p>We have made no such assessment.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>There are mechanisms in place to ensure that the reimbursement prices paid by the National Health Service to dispensing contractors for generic (off-patent) medicines dispensed in primary care provide value for money for the NHS in the majority of instances.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p>For example, Part VIII of the Drug Tariff lists the most commonly prescribed products with a reimbursement price that dispensing contractors will be paid.
