star this property answer text <p>All meter points in new build homes must have a registered energy supplier. The builder can appoint a supplier of their choice but it is the supplier who has responsibility for the installation of meters in a property.</p><p>A number of energy suppliers are already installing smart gas and electricity meters in new build properties. The Government recently consulted on a proposal to activate the New and Replacement Obligation (NRO) in energy suppliers’ licences. The NRO would require suppliers to take all reasonable steps to install a compliant smart meter where a meter is fitted for the first time including in new build properties. We expect to make a decision to activate the NRO in due course.</p> more like this

As of the end of December 2018, there were nearly 13.8 million smart and advanced meters currently operating in Great Britain.</p><p> </p><p>Data is published only at Great Britain level. Data is not collected from energy suppliers in a format that allows local authority counts to be produced.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Consumers who would like a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) export tariff can contact their energy supplier to request that a smart meter is installed. Consumers who want a smart meter sooner than their current supplier can provide one could switch to a supplier who may be able to meet their needs.</p><p> </p><p>There were 14.9 million smart and advanced meters operating in Great Britain at the end of June 2019 and the Government is committed to every home and small business being offered smart meters by the end of 2020.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Government has introduced the New and Replacement Obligation (NRO) in energy suppliers’ licences which requires them to take all reasonable steps to install a smart meter where a meter is fitted for the first time, including in new build properties, or when an existing meter needs to be replaced.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Under Article 20 of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), consumers have the right to obtain and reuse their personal data, including smart metering consumption data that they have provided to the energy supplier. Energy consumers’ rights under the GDPR are not affected by switching energy supplier.</p><p> </p><p>In order to ensure that energy consumers have control over their energy consumption data, the Government established the smart metering Data Access and Privacy Framework, which is implemented through energy licences and codes and complements wider data protection legislation. Energy suppliers are required to make available to domestic consumers with meters in smart mode, upon request, up to 24 months of data relating to consumption in each day, week, month and year. The data must be made available free of charge and in a readily understandable format.</p><p> </p><p>The Information Commissioner's Office is responsible for upholding information rights, while the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets is responsible for regulating energy suppliers’ compliance with licence obligations.</p>

star this property answer text <p>There were 21.5 million smart and advanced meters in homes and small businesses across Great Britain, as of the end of June 2020. Research has found that 80% of people with smart meters say they have a better idea of their energy costs and 88% of prepayment customers with smart meters say that topping up has become easier.</p><p> </p><p>Further to the publication of guidance on safe working during coronavirus (COVID-19) in May 2020, energy suppliers have been scaling up installation volumes, while implementing additional safety measures to ensure the wellbeing of customers and staff.</p><p> </p><p>In June 2020, the Government confirmed that from July 2021 a new four-year policy framework will be implemented with fixed annual installation milestones for energy suppliers that will drive roll-out momentum.</p><p> </p> more like this

Nearly half (47%) of meters in households are smart meters.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has confirmed that a new four-year policy framework with fixed minimum annual installation targets for energy suppliers will commence on 1 January 2022 to drive the consistent, long-term investment needed to deliver the rollout.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The energy price cap ensures 4.5 million prepayment meter customers pay a fair price for their energy. The Government announced a further £15 billion package of support to help with the cost of living on 26 May, on top of the £22 billion already announced this year. This means almost eight million most vulnerable households will get £1,200 of one-off support in total this year, with all domestic electricity customers receiving at least £400.</p><p> </p><p>The Ability to Pay principal set by Ofgem in the supply licence requires suppliers to provide appropriate support to households which are struggling to pay their energy bills by setting up repayment plans based on a customer’s ability to pay, and by directing them to further support services.</p> more like this
