star this property answer text <p>It is already illegal for taxi and Private Hire Vehicle drivers to refuse to carry an assistance dog or to charge their owner more for a journey. Local licensing authorities should ensure that drivers are aware of their duties, and that appropriate action, including prosecution, is taken where non-compliance is identified.</p><p> </p><p>There is also already a legal duty for service providers to provide reasonable adjustments to disabled people so that they are not put at a significant disadvantage compared to non-disabled people, which may include allowing access for assistance dogs where animals would not normally be permitted.</p><p> </p><p>The Office for Disability Issues has been facilitating the assistance dog sector to work together to look at access and supply issues, with a view to creating an accredited UK standard. This work is ongoing but if a standard can be achieved this should reduce the likelihood of access refusals.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Misogyny is not a hate crime in law, therefore no data is held about specific incidences. The Government has heard concerns about existing legislation and asked the Law Commission to undertake a full review of hate crime legislation, which will report in early 2021.</p><p>The Government is committed to ensuring that women are able to participate fully in public life. Our Public Appointments Diversity Action plan, published in June 2019, sets out the actions we are taking to ensure that, by 2022, 50% of public appointees are women. Additionally, projects funded by our £5 million Women's Suffrage Centenary Fund included an AskHerToStand event for 350 women giving them invaluable help to get on the first rung of a political career.</p><p>We have more women MPs and councillors than ever before and there are now 220 women MPs (34%), up from 22% in 2010. I am pleased this is the most gender balanced parliament on record.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>This research is a welcome addition to the canon of research on the efficacy of diversity and inclusion (D&amp;I) training.</p><p>We removed central unconscious bias training following the 2020 Behavioural Insight Team report which concluded that unconscious bias training was ineffective. This is supported by the recent report on the Inclusion at Work Panel’s recommendations for improving D&amp;I practice in the workplace (published 20 March 2024). We are currently considering these recommendations, including the recommendation to develop a digital tool kit to assess the rigour, efficacy and value for money of a range of D&amp;I practices, including training interventions.</p><p> </p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Such actions would be concerning and potentially unlawful. The Equality Act 2010 provides that it is unlawful age discrimination for a service provider such as a car hire company to refuse, on age grounds, to lease a vehicle to an otherwise qualified person, unless the company can objectively justify its decision.</p><p>Where a company cannot, in those circumstances, show that their leasing policy is a proportionate means of achieving a legitimate aim, the affected person can bring a case to the County Court, or Sheriff’s Court in Scotland. The court can then determine whether the “objective justification test” has been satisfied, and may award costs and compensation where the individual wins their case. A range of guidance is available to service providers on their obligations and to service users on their rights, most notably on the Equality and Human Rights Commission’s website, but also through the Equality and Advisory and Support Service (EASS). star this property answer text <p>The Government introduced ground-breaking regulations in 2017 requiring large employers to publish gender pay gap data.</p><p> </p><p>We recognise that reporting is just the start; we are committed to ensuring that the UK is an international leader on gender equality research.</p><p> </p><p>This year, we published the Case for Change, an in-depth analysis of how economic gender inequalities develop across people’s lives. In this, we highlight research we published in 2018, led by the University of Manchester, that identified four key drivers of the UK Gender Pay Gap:</p><p> </p><ul><li><p>Occupational segregation - the types of jobs that women tend to do are less well paid than the types of jobs men do.</p></li><li><p>Industrial segregation - the sectors of the economy that women tend to work in are less well paid than the sectors that men work in.</p></li><li><p>Differences in the ways men and women participate in the labour market - women tend to spend more years out of the labour market undertaking unpaid care work than men, and tend to have fewer years of full-time work experience.</p></li><li><p>Other factors that cannot be explained by the data we have, but could include discrimination, harassment, preferences and choices.</p></li></ul><p>To address these drivers, we published the Gender Equality Roadmap in July, setting out the Government’s vision and actions to address the persistent gendered barriers people face across their lives. Furthermore, our new annual Gender Equality Monitor brings together 24 indicators on gender equality from all areas of life to help us better measure progress over time.</p><p>We are also running two research programmes, Women and Gender Equality and Gender and Behavioural Insights, to develop the evidence base on gender equality in the workplace. Findings from this research is being used to identify practical actions for employers and organisations to support women’s progression in the workplace and reduce their gender pay gap.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The Gender Pay Gap among all employees in the UK continues to decline, currently at a record low of 17.3%.</p><p> </p><p>This year, mandatory reporting regulations have seen over 10,000 employers report their gender pay gap for the second time, with around half of all employers in-scope of the regulations publishing action plans.</p><p> </p><p>To close the gap entirely we need a much wider cultural change, which can’t be imposed from above. We strongly encourage all employers to publish action plans, prompting discussions about the drivers of the pay gap in their organisations. To support employers, we have published advice on how to diagnose their gaps and develop an effective action plan, alongside evidence-based guidance on practical actions they can take to close the gap. We actively disseminate this guidance to employers throughout the year to ensure they have the information they need to create an action plan.</p><p> </p><p>This position is kept under review. If we do not think that employers are making enough progress, we will act.</p>

star this property answer text <p>This Government is working to support all people through COVID-19, including BAME women. Guided by medical and scientific expertise, we have implemented specific measures to reduce the spread of the virus in all communities for everyone including women from BAME backgrounds.</p><p>This Government has taken unprecedented steps to support lives and livelihoods, including increasing the generosity of Universal Credit, introducing the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme and Self-Employment Income Support Scheme, and made changes to ensure women do not miss out on parental leave and childcare support. In addition, Equality Hub officials regularly meet with organisations representing women and BAME communities and continue to do so. We are also working to alert and encourage relevant grassroots charities to apply for funding that has been made available including through the National Lottery Community Fund.</p><p>Public Health England has now completed its review into ‘Disparities in the risk and outcomes of COVID-19’, which confirms that COVID-19 has replicated, and in some cases increased, existing health inequalities related to risk factors, including age, gender, ethnicity and geography. The Minister for Equalities is working with the Race Disparity Unit and the Department for Health and Social Care to carry forward work to address the disparities outlined in the Public Health England report.</p><p> </p>
