There are a number of ways that we are tackling these types of exploitation. The Modern Slavery Act 2015, gives law enforcement agencies the tools to tackle modern slavery, such as sex trafficking and domestic servitude, including maximum life sentences for perpetrators and enhanced protection for victims, including children.</p><p>Where children are found to be potential victims of human trafficking or modern slavery their safety and welfare are addressed as a priority. Local authorities are responsible for safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all children in their area, including child victims of modern slavery.</p><p>In addition to this statutory support, the Government has rolled out Independent Child Trafficking Guardians (ICTGs) who provide an additional source of advice and support for all potentially trafficked children, irrespective of nationality. As of May 2021, ICTGs are available in two thirds of all local authorities across England and Wales.</p><p>The Government has announced its intention to review the 2014 Modern Slavery Strategy to consider how we can strengthen our approach. This will include considering what further measures can be put in place to reduce the risks of modern slavery exploitation to children.</p><p>On 20 January the Government announced £40m of dedicated investment for 2021/22 to tackle drugs supply and county lines, doubling our investment from last year. However, following careful consideration, and taking on board requests and feedback from key stakeholders, the implementation of Section 43 has been delayed until Spring 2023.</p><p>The additional time before commencement and implementation will allow industries to fully prepare for any changes they need to make to ensure full compliance with the UK immigration system, should they wish to bring in foreign national workers to work in UK waters. Fishermen can currently use the Skilled Worker route, eligible jobs include share fishermen, trawler skippers, fish processors, and deckhands on large fishing vessels (9m+). We attend and support pro bono events across the country, to encourage the excellent work being done by the pro bono community. We regularly assess how we can enhance our ability to make a positive difference, including in the context of the increased risks posed by the Covid-19 outbreak.</p><p>In July 2019, the UK set out its ongoing dedication to support and protect human right defenders in the document &quot;UK Support for Human Rights Defenders&quot;. The publication makes clear that our diplomatic network will work with and alongside Non Governmental Organisation representatives and human rights defenders to address the challenges they face. This includes human rights defenders who are detained, on trial or imprisoned.</p><p>On 4 June 2020, the UK joined human rights Ambassadors from six other European nations to issue a statement highlighting the importance of ensuring a safe enabling environment for human rights defenders. To work, it must be given effect in a pragmatic, practical and proportionate way. That is how we ensure it can meet its core purposes: to uphold the Belfast/Good Friday Agreement in all its dimensions, safeguard Northern Ireland’s integral place in the United Kingdom, and prevent a hard border on the island of Ireland.</p><p> </p><p>This has been the basis on which the UK Government has continued to give effect to its obligations under the Protocol, conscious of the need to minimise its impact on everyday lives in Northern Ireland - as the Protocol itself sets out.</p><p> </p><p>There have been difficulties in the operation of the Protocol, and we are working through the structures of the Withdrawal Agreement to seek to resolve these. <ins class="ministerial">The UK and EU were able to use the Ireland/Northern Ireland Specialised Committee on 26 March to take stock of outstanding issues.
