Authority to activate such systems is given only in full accordance with the targeting directive for a specific theatre of operations, targeting policy and rules of engagement which ensure adherence to international humanitarian law. <br><br>The decision to deploy a particular weapon system in any given theatre of operations depends upon the context of that operation. It would be unreasonable to deny our Armed Forces the option of using the most appropriate weapons (including systems that can be operated in automatic mode) to engage legitimate military targets.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>We remain committed to ensuring the Royal Navy has the ships and capabilities required to fulfil Defence commitments now and in the future.</p><p>Babcock is contractually obligated to deliver five Type 31 Frigates to the Ministry of Defence (MOD) by the end of 2028, and HMS GLASGOW, the first of the Type 26 Frigates, will be in-service with the MOD in 2027. The last Type 23 Frigate will be transitioned out of service in 2035. The first Type 45 Destroyer entered service in 2010, these Destroyers have a projected 25-year life span.</p><p>The Prime Minister has committed to undertake the deepest review of Britain's security, defence and foreign policy. This review will examine how we strengthen and prioritise our alliances, diplomacy and development and will consider all aspects of our defence and security capabilities, including our approach to procurement and maintaining our technological edge. We are considering a number of options to increase the availability of ships during this period.</p>

unstar this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is clear that LIBOR funding should not be used to fund Departmental core responsibilities. The funding application form explicitly states that funds cannot be used to top-up existing grants and aids from Government Departments or for projects, activities or services that the State has a legal obligation to provide. The use of LIBOR fines to support additional facilities and programmes over and above the core activities, support, and infrastructure provided by the MOD is entirely consistent with the scope of the LIBOR fund.</p><p> </p><p>Armed Forces related LIBOR grants, including bespoke funds such as the Armed Forces Covenant Fund and Aged Veterans Fund, are committed by HM Treasury and administered by the MOD. Veterans, emergency services charities and other related good causes benefit from hundreds of millions of pounds from LIBOR banking fines. Money given to Departments since 2012 from these fines is ring fenced to be spent on these worthy causes. Funding for centres and facilities is consistent with supporting good causes and is making a difference to the Armed Forces community.</p><p> </p><p>As part of the routine governance of the LIBOR fund, in early 2017 the Treasury commissioned a review of all LIBOR grants committed since 2012. This review, which will include all LIBOR grants made directly by HM Treasury, as well as grants awarded under the Covenant Fund, the Aged Veterans Fund and the Veterans Accommodation Fund, will report in summer 2018. The National Audit Office have been kept fully informed of the progress of the review.</p><p> </p><p>As the Minister responsible for Service people and veterans, I meet regularly with Service charity representatives and discuss a wide range of issues, including funding.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

unstar this property answer text <p>The Ministry of Defence (MOD) is clear that LIBOR funding should not be used to fund Departmental core responsibilities. The funding application form explicitly states that funds cannot be used to top-up existing grants and aids from Government Departments or for projects, activities or services that the State has a legal obligation to provide. The use of LIBOR fines to support additional facilities and programmes over and above the core activities, support, and infrastructure provided by the MOD is entirely consistent with the scope of the LIBOR fund.</p><p> </p><p>Armed Forces related LIBOR grants, including bespoke funds such as the Armed Forces Covenant Fund and Aged Veterans Fund, are committed by HM Treasury and administered by the MOD. Veterans, emergency services charities and other related good causes benefit from hundreds of millions of pounds from LIBOR banking fines. Money given to Departments since 2012 from these fines is ring fenced to be spent on these worthy causes. Funding for centres and facilities is consistent with supporting good causes and is making a difference to the Armed Forces community.</p><p> </p><p>As part of the routine governance of the LIBOR fund, in early 2017 the Treasury commissioned a review of all LIBOR grants committed since 2012. This review, which will include all LIBOR grants made directly by HM Treasury, as well as grants awarded under the Covenant Fund, the Aged Veterans Fund and the Veterans Accommodation Fund, will report in summer 2018. The National Audit Office have been kept fully informed of the progress of the review.</p><p> </p><p>As the Minister responsible for Service people and veterans, I meet regularly with Service charity representatives and discuss a wide range of issues, including funding.</p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p><p> </p>

However, security-critical military applications require the greatest level of assurance that they will work as needed. The stance taken by the EU does not meet our security needs, and since January 2018 they have excluded UK companies from participating in the security elements of the programme, pre-empting and prejudicing negotiations and limiting the possibility of retaining the necessary level of assurance. This leaves us no alternative but to rule out military and critical national infrastructure use of the secure aspects of Galileo. We have asked the UK’s world-leading space and cryptography industries to develop plans for a UK system which fully meets our security requirements.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Global Satellite Navigation Systems have a very wide range of uses and all of the current systems have clear civil, security and defence utility. The UK GNSS would offer additional capabilities for use by the Government including by the Ministry of Defence.</p><p> </p><p>The UK Space Agency is leading the Engineering Design and Development Phase announced by my rt. hon. Friend the Prime Minister in August with the full support of the Ministry of Defence. This phase will develop plans for a possible UK system.</p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Since 1 January 2015, the UK has been part of NATO's Resolute Support Mission which is a non-combat mission to Train, Advise and Assist Afghan security institutions and the Afghan National Defence and Security Forces (ANDSF). The Parachute Regiment currently contribute personnel to the Kabul Security force (KSF) under this mission. The KSF's primary role is to secure and enable the mentoring and training activity by the international community. The KSF also mentors parts of the ANDSF directly.</p> more like this

Capita's bid for the provision of the Defence Fire and Rescue project was subject to the fullest range of scrutiny within Government, including an assessment of their financial sustainability and their ability to deliver the required services.
