star this property answer text <p>The UK has significant expertise in crisis preparedness and consular affairs. Thanks to its extensive global footprint of <del class="ministerial">273</del> <ins class="ministerial">274</ins> posts in 169 countries and territories, and its network of Honorary Consuls, the UK is able to provide professional consular services worldwide. In addition to our network, people who need assistance can call any of our embassies, high commissions or consulates, or the FCO switchboard, 24/7 for advice or help. The UK is open to maintaining a close level of cooperation with the EU, if this is perceived to be of mutual benefit, on crisis preparedness and consular affairs, including the provision of consular assistance to unrepresented EU citizens in third countries on a reciprocal basis. It is essential that both the Federal and State Governments in Nigeria address the drivers of conflict by working to develop solutions that meet the needs of all the communities affected. The UK and Nigeria have a security and defence partnership, signed during the Prime Minister's visit. We support the Nigerian authorities in improving security and in order to enable economic growth. The UK is also providing humanitarian and development aid to Nigeria, investing over £300 million over the next five years.</p> more like this

The British High Commission, alongside international partners, carried out a demarche on the Tanzanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on 2 November, urging the authorities to respect human rights and protect all citizens from discrimination. I welcome the Government of Tanzania's statement on 4 November making clear that such threats do not represent government policy, and that it will protect human rights as enshrined in the country's constitution. We must all reject language that invites violence against any group in society.</p> more like this

It is essential that security forces act in accordance with international law and work to protect civilians. As a priority, the Federal Government of Somalia must maintain momentum in developing and implementing a plan for transitioning security responsibility from the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) to Somali-led forces. They must also deliver widespread, sustainable reform of the security sector, in line with the commitments made at the 2017 London Somalia Conference. Coordinated international support to these efforts is vital, and the UK is playing a leading role.</p> more like this
