The Home Office therefore does not collate or publish the data requested</p><p>(b) The Home Office record the number of all individuals referred to the National Referral Mechanism (NRM) and this information is published Quarterly by the National Crime Agency, found at <a href="http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/publications/national-referral-mechanism-statistics.%20" target="_blank">http://www.nationalcrimeagency.gov.uk/publications/national-referral-mechanism-statistics. </a></p><p>This information does not distinguish between those detained under immigration powers and those living in the community. The reason for this is two-fold, firstly because the NRM referral is not an immigration route by which individuals should regularise their stay in the United Kingdom and, secondly, because a person’s status in immigration detention is not permanent and can change.</p><p>The use of immigration detention in all cases is subject to regular reviews and consequently a change in circumstance may result in a different consideration. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 17/06/2019 answer text <p>In November 2018, the Home Office published data on the number of deaths in the detention estate and absconds from the detention estate for the first time in its official <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/immigration-statistics-year-ending-september-2018/how-many-people-are-detained-or-returned" target="_blank">Immigration Statistics</a>. This data will continue to be published on an annual basis each August.</p><p><br>At the same time, the Home Office published data on pregnant women in detention and further breakdowns of data on reports made by a medical practitioner under Rule 35 for the first time in the <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/immigration-enforcement-data-november-2018" target="_blank">Immigration Enforcement Transparency</a> data. This data will continue to be published on a quarterly basis.</p><p><br>In February 2019, the Home Office also announced its intention to undertake a more extensive review of the published enforcement data and has invited initial user feedback on the current and future publication of enforcement data. In the same period 71% of detainees were held for 28 days or less and 93% for less than four months.</p><p>The Government expects that changes in policy and operational approaches will lead to a reduction in the number of those detained, and the duration of detention before removal, in turn improving the welfare of those detained.</p><p>The Government is committed to using detention sparingly and only when necessary. The Home Office has taken a systematic approach to modernising and rationalising the immigration detention estate, ensuring the geographical footprint and resilience required to meet our future needs. Instead, IRC suppliers are required to provide a safe and secure environment for detainees in their care and all IRC contracts require a minimum staffing level based on the size and layout of each individual centre. The Home Office and its suppliers do not release information on staff deployment as doing so could compromise security of the removal estate.</p><p>In the period ahead, new contracts will set high expectations for the quality of the management and staffing in IRCs.
