unstar this property answer text <p>A number of offences controlling the international trade in endangered species are created by the COTES Regulations 1997.</p><p> </p><ul><li><p>Regulation 3: offences concerning false statements or notifications.</p></li><li><p>Regulation 4: offences of altering or wrongfully using a permit, certificate or import notification.</p></li><li><p>Regulation 6: contravening conditions or requirements of permits or certificates.</p></li><li><p>Regulation 8: offences of purchasing, acquiring, selling any specimen of a species for commercial purposes.</p></li></ul><p> </p><p>Although it is not possible to identify the number of prosecutions of particular offences, records are held showing the overall number of offences in which a prosecution commenced in the magistrates’ courts. The table below shows the number of offences, rather than defendants, charged by way of the COTES Regulations 1997 and Section 170(2) CEMA 1979 during each of the last five years. There is derogation in the EC CITES Regulation for pre -1947 worked ivory which means that commercial use within the EU does not require documentation.</p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>Although the proposed ban on sales of ivory less than 70 years old is expected to have a relatively modest impact on volumes of trade, the global trade for modern ivory is more likely to fuel demand and provide a means of laundering fresh ivory from illegally-killed elephants than trade in older items. We want to send a strong signal, both within the UK and internationally, that ivory is not desirable and that legal domestic trade in ivory should be stopped where it is contributing to poaching and trafficking. Closing the market for UK sales of ivory less than 70 years old will be an important way of doing this.</p><p> </p> more like this

unstar this property answer text <p>In September, the Secretary of State for Environment announced a ban on trade in worked ivory from the last 70 years, making the UK rules on ivory amongst the toughest in the world. We will be consulting shortly on these plans.</p><p> </p><p>Our consultation will also seek evidence on the benefits and impacts of taking further action, and we welcome evidence from all stakeholders in response to our consultation.
