star this property answer text <p>The UK is at the forefront of international efforts to protect the welfare of animals. The Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs leads on these issues, and through the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species the UK is in discussion with elephant range States, including India, to increase protection for Asian elephants. The Government is also working closely with the European Commission and other Member States, with the support of international animal welfare organisations and other interested groups, to try to raise global standards of animal welfare.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Since 2014, no commercial fishing licenses have been issued whilst options for marine management around Ascension Island are considered.</p><p>However, between 2010 and 2013:</p><p>a) Fishing took place on 32% of available fishing days in the outer 25nm of the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)<br>b) Fishing took place on 66% of available fishing days in the outer 50nm of the EEZ<br>c) Fishing took place on 79% of available fishing days in the outer 75nm of the EEZ<br>d) Fishing took place on 90% of available fishing days in the outer 100nm of the EEZ</p><p>The above data is generalised and not a definitive amount per area as catch data was reported by vessels weekly, however, only based on a single location per week.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>A new five year Strategy for South Georgia &amp; the South Sandwich Islands, Strategy 2016 - 2020, was published in November 2015. The Strategy brings together HMG and the Government of South Georgia &amp; the South Sandwich Islands’ objectives. The Strategy aspires to world-class environmental management underpinned by the highest standards of governance, and sets out five strategic objectives. A copy of the Strategy can be found at:</p><p><a href="http://tinyurl.com/zfjbpn4" target="_blank">http://tinyurl.com/zfjbpn4</a></p><p>The FCO is currently working with the Ascension Island Government to identify the island’s infrastructure needs. star this property answer text <p>There has been one confirmed sighting of a rodent in October 2014. It was found in an area baited as part of the rodent eradication project. The source of the rodent is not known. On its sighting a pre-prepared plan was enacted. After intensive monitoring of the area, no signs of rodents have been seen, and it is believed the response was effective and the area remains rodent free.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands operates a wide range of peer-reviewed rodent detection and mitigation measures which seek to prevent rodents from entering the Territory. It works closely with those organisations with a footprint on South Georgia to ensure best practice guidelines are implemented. At present these measures do not include the use of a rodent detection dog, although the feasibility of this is under active consideration with relevant stakeholders as part of wider discussions to continually improve biosecurity.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Ascension Island Government currently maintains a closed area of approximately 220,000 square kilometres to commercial fishing. Working with a coalition of academic institutions, scientists and non-governmental organisations, the Island Government is currently developing a scientific roadmap to determine the location of the final Marine Protected Area ahead of formal designation. Scientific research is underway to assist in this process and once collected and analysed will inform the final designation, which is on track to occur within the next few years.</p> more like this
