star this property answer text <p>The Government is committed to tackling our shortage of STEM skills so we can grow the workforce we need for a dynamic economy. We are doing this by investing in programmes to increase the take-up of maths, by incentivising schools using the recently launched advanced maths premium and supporting better teaching of maths, physics and computing in schools, including a new £84 million programme to improve computing teaching.</p><p> </p><p>To improve the development of technical STEM skills, the Government is introducing T levels, which will be developed with employers, and provide progression opportunities into skilled work or higher level study, including degrees.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>We are consulting on the proposals in our green paper on Children and Young Peoples’ Mental Health published last month.</p><p> </p><p>Supported by over £300 million of funding it includes plans to train Mental Health Leads in schools, particularly in how to take a ‘whole school approach’ to promoting and supporting good mental health. star this property answer text <p>The Government takes the safety of pupils and staff seriously. All schools have to follow strict fire safety regulations, including having a Fire Risk Assessment, designed to ensure they are as safe as possible and well prepared in the event of a fire.</p><p>Where sprinklers are deemed necessary to keep pupils and staff safe, following an assessment of risk at the design stage, or to meet local planning requirements, they must be fitted. All new school building projects must comply with Building Regulations, including on fire safety, and this is independently checked by Building Control or an Approved Inspector before buildings are occupied.</p><p>As not all new schools are commissioned by the Department, we do not hold data on the number of all new schools that have been built with or without sprinklers installed. The Department do hold information on the centrally funded Priority Schools Building Programme (PSBP).</p><p>The Education and Skills Funding Agency (ESFA) has built or refurbished seven schools in Coventry under phase one of PSBP and of those, five schools were fitted with sprinklers.</p><p>The Depatment does not hold comprehensive data on the number of free schools fitted with sprinklers as schools developed under the free schools programme were originally managed by the individual free school proposer groups. The Department is doing further work that will enable us to provide figures on sprinklers fitted in all schools delivered centrally by the ESFA.</p><p>Alongside the rest of Government, the Department will take forward findings from the independent review of Building Regulations and Fire Safety, and from the Public Inquiry into the tragic Grenfell Tower fire.</p>

star this property answer text <p>The survey ‘Supporting mental health in schools and colleges’[1] shows the extensive help that schools provide for their pupils at present.</p><p>In December 2017 the Government published the green paper ‘Transforming children and young people’s mental health provision’,[2] which sets out further support, including designated senior leads for mental health in schools and colleges, and a significant increase in the number of early intervention practitioners</p><p>The Department is considering how mental health and wellbeing should be covered in the curriculum, as part of a process to determine the content of Relationships education and Relationships and Sex Education, and the future status of Personal, Social, Health and Economic education. In providing education and support, schools and colleges must have regard to their equalities duties, including ensuring that they meet the needs of Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) pupils.</p><p>As the Against the Odds report suggests, behaviour management and exclusions practice in schools is an important factor. Disclosure of the information would be likely otherwise to prejudice the effective conduct of public affairs. A public interest test was carried out and the decision to withhold this information is maintained.</p><p>One of the three schools that contacted the Department suggested a specific site for an annex. This was on land adjacent to the current school site and within the same local authority area.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>On 14 December 2017 the Department published advice for schools on how to prevent and respond to reports of sexual violence and sexual harassment between children: <a href="https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sexual-violence-and-sexual-harassment-between-children-in-schools-and-colleges" target="_blank">https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/sexual-violence-and-sexual-harassment-between-children-in-schools-and-colleges</a>.</p><p>The Department wants to ensure that all pupils gain the knowledge and skills they need to keep themselves safe and develop healthy, respectful and positive relationships for adult life in modern Britain. The Department is actively engaging with a wide range of stakeholders to develop the regulations and guidance on Relationships Education and Relationships and Sex Education; and we launched two calls for evidence on 19 December, one for adults and one for young people, to seek views on the curriculum content for these subjects. The calls for evidence close on 12 February and can be accessed via this link: <a href="https://consult.education.gov.uk/life-skills/pshe-rse-call-for-evidence/" target="_blank">https://consult.education.gov.uk/life-skills/pshe-rse-call-for-evidence/</a>.</p><p>We envisage draft regulations and the guidance will be published for consultation later this year. star this property answer text <p>The Department have invested £5.6 billion since 2015 to maintain and improve school facilities, and rebuild or replace buildings in the worst condition. In addition, the £4.4 billion Priority School Building Programme is rebuilding or refurbishing school buildings in the very worst condition across the country. Local authorities, academy trusts and others responsible for school buildings conduct their own assessments of condition so that they can prioritise investment of capital funding to meet local needs.</p><p> </p><p>The Department is undertaking the Condition Data Collection (CDC) programme, the successor to the Property Data Survey (PDS) programme, which is expected to be completed in autumn 2019. CDC will provide a high-level assessment of the building condition of all state-funded schools and will inform our approach to capital funding. Until then, the PDS remains the most up to date national dataset.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>It is for admissions authorities to decide whether to give priority to siblings in their admissions arrangements, where the school is oversubscribed, and many schools do choose to do this. The Government expects schools to balance prioritising siblings with ensuring places are also available for other local children who do not have a sibling at the school.</p><p>The Department wants fair access to a good school place for every pupil. That is why we routinely keep the admissions system under review and seek regular feedback from stakeholders on the system. Any changes to the School Admissions Code will require a full statutory process, including consultation and parliamentary scrutiny.</p> more like this
