The United Nations (UN) estimates that 21.2 million people in Yemen require humanitarian assistance to meet their basic needs for food, water, sanitation, and healthcare, or protect their fundamental rights. Yemen is also experiencing an economic crisis, which has driven up food and other prices, and reduced people’s purchasing power.</p><p>Ultimately, only an end to the conflict will address the humanitarian crisis. The UK is working closely with other countries to de-escalate the conflict and is providing significant support to UN-led peace talks. The UK is also working with the UN and other countries to improve commercial and humanitarian access to and within Yemen.</p><p>The Secretary of State recently co-hosted an international event on Yemen to shine a spotlight on the humanitarian crisis. According to the UN, more than 10 million people require immediate humanitarian aid to survive, including half a million children under 5 who are severely malnourished.</p><p> </p><p>The UN has launched the largest ever humanitarian appeal for Yemen, requesting $2.1 billion to provide life-saving assistance to 12 million people in 2017.</p><p> </p><p>In 2015 and 2016, the UK helped over 1 million Yemenis with food, medical assistance and clean water. 	answer	answer is ministerial correction date of answer 18/07/2017 answer text <p>Working with international partners, the UK Government has been instrumental in agreeing a tougher approach to deliberate restrictions on humanitarian access by the Government of South Sudan, which sets out clearly the consequences of violations against aid workers. We ensure UK Aid is effective by working through a range of UN and international organisations who are experienced in operating in South Sudan, who are able to work across the country, and who can deliver flexibly according to need.</p><p>The UK continues to provide humanitarian assistance in South Sudan, where half the population is in need.
