star this property answer text <p>All meter points in new build homes must have a registered energy supplier. The builder can appoint a supplier of their choice but it is the supplier who has responsibility for the installation of meters in a property.</p><p>A number of energy suppliers are already installing smart gas and electricity meters in new build properties. The Government recently consulted on a proposal to activate the New and Replacement Obligation (NRO) in energy suppliers’ licences. The NRO would require suppliers to take all reasonable steps to install a compliant smart meter where a meter is fitted for the first time including in new build properties. We expect to make a decision to activate the NRO in due course.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government wants as many homes and small businesses as possible to benefit from smart metering and has taken steps to make it the default meter offer in Great Britain.</p><p> </p><p>The smart metering Targets Framework introduced this year sets energy suppliers minimum annual installation targets to ensure the rollout continues to deliver at scale. The Department also works closely with industry to drive best practice.</p><p> </p><p>There is a strict Data Access and Privacy Framework for smart metering, that protects consumers’ privacy. Households have control over who can access their energy consumption data and for what purposes, except where this is required for regulated purposes (e.g. billing).</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Consumers who would like a Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) export tariff can contact their energy supplier to request that a smart meter is installed. Consumers who want a smart meter sooner than their current supplier can provide one could switch to a supplier who may be able to meet their needs.</p><p> </p><p>There were 14.9 million smart and advanced meters operating in Great Britain at the end of June 2019 and the Government is committed to every home and small business being offered smart meters by the end of 2020.</p><p> </p><p>In addition, the Government has introduced the New and Replacement Obligation (NRO) in energy suppliers’ licences which requires them to take all reasonable steps to install a smart meter where a meter is fitted for the first time, including in new build properties, or when an existing meter needs to be replaced.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The Government is delivering the Energy Bills Support Scheme, a £400 non-repayable grant to support all families with their energy bills. Additionally, the Energy Price Guarantee (EPG) will save a typical household in Great Britain £900 this Winter.</p><p> </p><p>The Government is currently reviewing the EPG. This consultation will ensure that vulnerable high energy users, such as those with medical requirements, are not put at risk of having to pay more.</p><p> </p><p>Customers with smart prepayment meters have the credit applied to their meter automatically, and those with traditional prepayment meters should have received discount vouchers sent via SMS text, email, post or a Special Action Message. Electricity suppliers have reported that, as of 1 December, they had issued 4,044,554 vouchers to customers with traditional prepayment meters.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>Suppliers are required to offer vulnerable households with prepayment meters short-term support through emergency and friendly-hours credit and additional support credit if needed. The Government has put in place support worth over £37bn to assist consumers, including those with prepayment meters, with recent rises in the cost of living. The household support fund, assisting those most in need, has also been extended to March of this year. Support for eligible households is also available through the Warm Home Discount, the Winter Fuel Payment and the Cold Weather Payment.</p> more like this

star this property answer text <p>The smart meter rollout is making good progress, with 26.4 million smart and advanced meters in homes and small businesses across Great Britain by end September 2021, including 24.8 million smart meters in domestic premises. Nearly half (47%) of meters in households are smart meters.</p><p> </p><p>The Government has confirmed that a new four-year policy framework with fixed minimum annual installation targets for energy suppliers will commence on 1 January 2022 to drive the consistent, long-term investment needed to deliver the rollout.</p> more like this
