star this property answer text We are working closely with international partners, including Gulf countries, to tackle the shared threat posed by ISIL. UK Ministers and officials have had a number of discussions recently with Gulf partners about coalition action against ISIL. The Prime Minister discussed the issue with His Majesty, King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia on 8 October. The Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, my right hon. Friend the Member for Runnymede and Weybridge discussed it with his Gulf counterparts on 14 October at the UK-GCC Foreign Ministers meeting in Kuwait. I discussed it with the Saudi Arabian ambassador earlier this month and with the UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs on 21 October. more like this

star this property answer text UK aid is reaching displaced people across Iraq, including in the Kurdish region, where many Yazidis have fled to. In August, the UK conducted seven air drops to provide life-saving aid to Yazidi people trapped on Mount Sinjar. Through these airdrops, the Department For International Development (DFID) provided over 80 tonnes of aid, including 9,400 reusable water purification containers filled with clean water, 1,000 solar lanterns, and 1,000 shelter kits for the people stranded on the mountain. DFID continue to assess the humanitarian situation. They have provided £23 million of aid to Iraq including £17.5 million of funding to UN agencies, Non Governmental Organisation partners and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to ensure displaced people get the basic assistance they need - including food, shelter, water, sanitation and medical care. more like this

star this property answer text ISIL are seeking to influence other groups beyond the Middle East. Recent communications from Boko Haram appear to contain similar elements to those found in ISIL videos. On 7 March, Boko Haram released an audio statement by leader Abubakar Shekau pledging allegiance to ISIL which was subsequently accepted by ISIL on 12 March. Although concerning, this is not a particularly significant development. We assess that the alignment of the groups is for propaganda purposes and we have seen no evidence of operational links between the groups. We continue to keep the situation under review. more like this

The Government has raised this issue with Prime Minister Abadi on a number of occasions, including during my visit to Baghdad in October when I welcomed the progress that has been made so far, including steps to reform the Iraqi Security Forces. The UK will continue to support Prime Minister Abadi’s efforts to advance the national reconciliation process.</p> more like this
